BLURB: "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you'd actually want to read. MY OPINION I got up to (Chapter 10, page 39) before I decided life was too short to read any more of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I know and love the original too well to be amused for long by such, what I consider to be, silliness. Maybe I'm too old for this stuff. I do enjoy parody, but this seems to be cashing in on the likes of The Twilight series which admittedly I've not yet seen or read, but have heard a lot about. Maybe I'm quite out of step with the prevailing zeitgeist. **** Sending to Veganmedusa for the Southern Cross book exchange as it's on her wishlist. I hope she gets more from it than I did!

Well, I think this could have been better, but I still enjoyed it. I didn't think Lizzie's character was altered well - she was too quick to want to cut the throat of anyone who besmirched her honour in the slightest. I think Lizzie would be more intelligent than that. But in saying that, her character did develop over the course of the book - she started off as a warrior first and foremost, and her growing admiration for Darcy tempered the warrior and woke the gentler side of her. The funny bits - Charlotte Lucas in her latter stages (being overcome with excitement and stuffing leaves in her mouth), Wickham and Lydia's marriage after the 'accident' seeming so unlikely and yet so perfect, Lady de Bourgh and Lizzie's confrontation in the dojo. Overall, worth reading - quite well done. Some of the added zombieness was just inserted in, but some of it really changed the nuances of the story. I'd definitely be keen to read 'Sense and Sensibility and Seamonsters' next!
