It is most disappointing that the cover art does not show up here (I really have to learn how to do that scanning thing) because the art work is the real charm of this book. That and learning a bit about the "Yule Lads" of Icelandic folklore upon which the story of the Gimli Trolls is based.

I was disappointed in the quality of the writing frankly and found it a bit awkward to read. I found the abundant use of both single and double quotation marks perplexing and while I'm no grammar guru parts of the narration seemed grammatically incorrect as well.

Still the introduction to each of the thirteen trolls who, legend has it, appear one each day from December 11 to December 23, to play pranks and tricks in Gimli was great fun. While each one has his own Anglicized name (set out in quotes) I think it would have added to the fun to have been given their true Icelandic names as well. For example, a bit of Googling told me that Pot Scraper's Icelandic name is Pottaskefill and Candle Thief is Kertasnikir.

I loved the artwork. Each white-bearded troll appears, in watercolours, dressed in identical red shirts, denim overalls and sheepskin boots. They're distinguishable by the colour and design of their stocking caps and hankies and the prank they're pulling.

I'll be releasing this book into the wilds for gypsysmom's Canada Day release challenge sometime between June 21 and July 1, 2009.
