I'm sure that this retelling of the King Lear tale just has to be described as a bawdy romp! Great fun, even if it does take more than the odd liberty with British history and geography and architecture and fashions and social mores and weather..... But then, as CM says in his notes at the back of the book, Shakespeare did the same, so why the hell not? (By the way, he was right placing Albany in Scotland - Alba is Gaelic for Scotland and there was an historic dukedom of Albany north o'the border.) At first I got irritated by all the footnotes. Presumably they are there for the US readership, or rather, non-Brit readership. But then it became interesting to see what CM felt he had to explain! And really amusing when he admitted that cockney rhyming slang remains a complete mystery to him. So, me old chinas, a damn fine jackanory! Feast your mincers and have a laugh!

Thanks Tony! It arrived a few days ago and I jumped right in. I can tell by the author's warning I'm going to like it!

Journal Entry 5 by Moody-Blue from Montrose, Colorado USA on Tuesday, July 21, 2009
As always, I'm amazed by Moore's creativity and astounded by the amount of research he must have done to be able to write this satire. How does he do it?! I absolutely loved this book. It makes me wish more authors would be so uncensored. It's the author's own fault that I didn't rate it a 10 because I know there are books out there, like his own Lamb, that are absolute perfection.

Heading off down the list tomorrow. I'm interested to see what Beth thinks...

Received today! (Hah, what a bunch of blarney that "media mail" takes weeks... pfftt!).

My sister (Moody-Blue) got me into Christopher Moore books a few years ago, and I just love his outlandish, totally inappropriate, bawdy style. Can't wait to dig into this one! I'll be starting this in just a few days.

Journal Entry 7 by BethanieKay from Melbourne, Florida USA on Sunday, August 9, 2009
Another randy and enjoyable tale by Christopher Moore. He's so descriptive in his writing, and it truly astounds me how he manages to come up with such off-the-wall terms, names, adjectives and exclamations. I laughed out loud in many parts, which is always a good thing for a book :)

I'll try to put this in the mail to shpriz1 tomorrow. Thanks for letting me join!

Got it safe and sound. I have another ring to get out of the way first, but I should be able to start reading this later this week. I can't wait to get some laughs :)

At first I found this book a little difficult to "get into". Remembering how much I enjoyed reading "Lamb" I was worried that "Fool" will end up disappointing me. I was worried for nothing. It turned out a really great read.
Thank you for starting this ring and for including me in it.
I already have eaterngirl71's address and I will send the book out ASAP.

Thank you so much, perryfran, for sending this on to me. It has come very quickly, and if my calculations are correct it was a pretty expensive package to send! Much appreciated. And, I love that stirring postcard that flambard has included.

Journal Entry 18 by wingCross-patchwing from Leicester, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Sunday, May 9, 2010
This is such a naughty book. I have been rubbish at reading it quickly because somehow hardback books send me to sleep more quickly which reduces my reading time! 'tongue in cheek smiley' The truth is that I just had a holiday in India and I don't take ring books on holiday in case I lose them. I loved this mad romp through good ole history and am amazed at Christopher Moore's cleverness, both with our language and the rewriting of a convoluted plot. I am so glad you provided this opportunity to read another Moore masterpiece. What to do with it? Do you want me to try to continue the ray or to search for a well- deserved RABCK?

There's nothing best than returning home after a few days being spent on a business trip, tired and with a suitcase full of laundry, and finding a mystery package waiting for you. The delight is then even bigger when you discover that the mystery package contains a book from your wishlist...hooray!!! Thank you so much for thinking of me - this book will hopefully be read soon as I am very intrigued by the topic (and of course I expect Moore to be his entertaining self, as usual!!).

Thanks again, and welcome back from the holidays - we have to get together again and do another book swap :)
