Journal Entry 1 by glade1 from McLeansville, North Carolina USA on Friday, May 29, 2009
Picked up from the free shelf at the used book store yesterday. From the book jacket: Will Rogers became a famous man in the 1920's for [his] common sense. His homespun humor made him the biggest box office attraction at the movies, the most widely read newspaper columnist, and the most popular humorist America had ever seen and perhaps will ever see again. The funniest and finest of the man who started his career as a trick roper are included in this new Will Rogers collection. Hardly a subject escaped his acute attention. He could range from the specific to the general, from automobiles to world politics with equal ease. Will poked fun at class snobbery while in the same breath using his own Indian heritage as a foil: "My ancestors didn't come over on the Mayflower, they met the boat." He could take the stuffiness out of morality and make it appealingly sensible: "You know horses are smarter than people. You never heard of a horse going broke betting on people." More than any other 20th century humorist, Will Rogers enriched the lives and outlook of his fellow Americans. Nearly a quarter of a century after his death, Herbert Hoover commented sadly on a void in American life: "We need an American humorist," he said. "There's been no one since Will Rogers." And his humor endures to this day. This new treasury of his best wit will bring smiles and insight to the young and old alike. (Published in 1969.)

Journal Entry 2 by glade1 at McLeansville, North Carolina USA on Thursday, July 01, 2010
This is an enjoyable book to read in one or two sittings. Many of his sayings apply as well today as they did in Rogers's lifetime, but some were a bit dated or hard for me to understand due to the frame of reference. Fun nonetheless! Marking as available until I find a suitable release.
