My women's book club is reading this soon, and I've heard from a couple other avid readers that it's a 'must read'!

From Publisher's Weekly:

What perfect timing for this optimistic, uplifting debut novel (and maiden publication of Amy Einhorn's new imprint) set during the nascent civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver.

Eugenia Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and, anxious to become a writer, is advised to hone her chops by writing about what disturbs you. The budding social activist begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, and Aibileen's best friend Minny, who's found herself unemployed more than a few times after mouthing off to her white employers.

The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams.

Assured and layered, full of heart and history, this one has bestseller written all over it.

What a great book - I was hooked nearly from the beginning. This is a fictional story about life in Mississippi in 1964, when segregation was still rampant, yet people were starting to change their views with the Civil Rights Movement. I found it a bit tricky to read in the voices of Minny and Aibileen, but got used to it after a while :) The story was truly unique and fascinating, yet utterly sad. In the end, the triumph (what there was of it) was rewarding and left me feeling satisfied at the outcome of the story.

I think my book club is reviewing this book for July, so hopefully I'll get to go and hear what everyone thought :) I'll loan this to my friend Danielle, who is also in the book group. After that, maybe I'll turn it into a bookring/ray.

First, the book is going to askanase down the road from me in Austin, TX. After that, the next reader will be arugh48187 in Minnesota.

I'll let you both know if/when I get any more requests ... and in the meantime, enjoy this book!

Thanks to BethanyKay for sending this to me. My book group read it and we all liked it. It was a compellling read and very enjoyable. Tough derivative in some parts, it is clearly a personal novel for the author and I felt a connection to the story and characters.

Just as expected, this one was really good. I loved all of the characters and enjoyed the storyline as well. This book was recommended to me by a guest at our B&N book club. Unfortunately, I haven't seen her since. She also said the "The Space Between Us" by Thrity Umrigar was good too. I read that one too, and so if you are looking for a similar storyline and another good read, I would use your Christmas gift card to get it ASAP.

Thanks for sharing. I will probably not get this in the mail before the holidays, but soon after it will be off.

Arrived this rainy January day, a bright note in a gray day. :) Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 15 by Stacers1973 from Gladstone, Oregon USA on Wednesday, February 3, 2010
I met some wonderful, amazing, kindhearted, brave women in the pages of this book. Sometimes the characters in stories are so one dimensional, but you could feel the love Aibileen had for Mae Mobley and Treelore. The conflict between Minny and Leroy was palpable. You could feel the heat of summer and the fear that was dripping off Miss Celia like the sweat trickling off everyone else. You couldn't help but perceive the scorn and disdain Miss Hilly wielded towards everyone who didn't think inside her little box and for those whose crayons were a different color.
I loved this book and was dumbfounded by the interactions between white and black folks. I was saddened by the way the white families held their power and uplifted by the beautiful moments some of them were able to find within each others lives. And I have to say I almost fell out of bed I was laughing so hard at the Terrible Awful.
Thanks for sharing the book BethanieKay and ring-ers! A great read :)
I have Moeshell's info and should put it in the mail today or tomorrow.

Got the book yesterday... thanks for sending Stacers1973 and thank BethanieKay for starting this ring. I'm in the middle of one ring right now, but will start this book next.

I usually don't give 10 stars for books, but this one I did. I just loved this book!! It is packed full of so many memorable characters, so many life lessons, and so many different favorite parts.

If you loved this one as much as I did, this Southern Fiction style, not so much about civil rights, but more along the lines of strong women characters and cooking and told from different view points then I also suggest "Crazy Ladies" by Michael Lee West... the follow up to it, "Mad Girls in Love" wasn't all that great.

I have guinaveve information and will send out by the end of this week.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful book and for a successful ring fellow BCers.

Thought this journal picture was perfect for this book!! :)

I know it is still early in the year, but I am going to go ahead and say this will probably be one of my top favorites of the whole year. I didn't want to put it down. The basic storyline was intriguing enough, but there was a lot of drama within. Hilly was written perfectly, I couldn't stand her. I was glad to read of her getting her "just desserts." (pun intended)
I love a book that really makes you care about the characters, think about them when you are not reading and wonder what will become of them. This book accomplished that for me. I so much wanted things to work out for so many of the characters.
I am PMing Moody-Blue for an address to send this on. I usually do this as soon as I get the book in the mail, but their where-abouts sounded a little ambiguous, so I waited until I finished reading.
Thanks for sharing this book with me!

My husband asked what this book was about and I had a hard time explaining it. There are so many topics involved and the way I described them didn't sound nearly as interesting as they truly are. This is a great story with even better characters -- a real page-turner! It's amazing to think that my parents were teenagers during this time period.
