Book club pick for July. It sounds sooooo good!

Here's a little blurb that I attach to each book that I've registered:

Welcome to BookCrossing! It's a site for catching and releasing books and spreading the good karma of reading! Please make a journal entry when you FIND this book and let previous readers know how you came upon it. You may remain anonymous on this site if you like but it's very safe and spam free. We leave FREE books around for others to stumble upon...they read, and then re-release in a public place for someone else to enjoy. Of course you're welcome to keep the book if you prefer but it's more fun to watch them travel and to hear from them once in a while. I hope you enjoy the book but I especially hope you enjoy BookCrossing.

Many thanks, Poobah1
Make the *WORLD* your library!

This one was just returned to me from my friend D, a member of my bookclub. She also happens to be a BookCrossing member but didn't journal on it. Unfortunately, she won't be making our next meeting in July so I'll have to follow up with her at a later date on her thoughts. I do hear good things about this book and I look forward to reading it.

Edited: It's not this month that D will be missing our meeting...it's next month. Unfortunately, that's my month and I have a scathingly brilliant scheme of a meeting planned. I know she'd love to join us but alas...one must travel to the Big Apple to hawk her wares (cool artwork that it is!)...gotta make the house payments! We'll miss the 'ol girl for sure.

Journal Entry 3 by Poobah1 from Lake Elmo, Minnesota USA on Saturday, July 11, 2009
I'm about 1/3 of the way through it and really like it so far. Great characters! Though, I don't think the author goes far enough with writing in "The Help's" dialect...I feel like, if she's going to do it at all, then she should go all the way with it. It feels as if she (Stockett) stops short and this evokes (to me)a lack of trust in the reader's ability to "go there". (if that makes any sense?) More later...it's not enough to deter me, I just definitely feel it.

Now, as for a plan for this book when I'm done with it? CF is hankering for this read and so *off* it will go to my groovy friend in Ohio! I'm just so happy to see her up and running on BC-I could scream!

Journal Entry 4 by Poobah1 from Lake Elmo, Minnesota USA on Monday, July 13, 2009
I liked it. It got a little sloggy in the middle but picked up nicely in the end. The characters were gripping in many ways but also hard to believe in some instances. Minnie, Aibileen, Hilly, Skeeter...great - Stuart, Elizabeth, Miss Celia...what are they about? Tough subject to get right. Overall, a good job by Stockett as a debut novel. I'm glad I read it, would recommend it to others and will be interested in what my book club's discussion brings to light.

Edited after bookclub discussion: Well, as usual, I come away from book club with a better appreciation of the books I read. It's always good to listen and take in other people thoughts on things {I guess that can be said about life in general}! The group really liked this book as a whole, rating it 8-9.5 out of 10 from all except me. I'm sticking with my 7 stars. While I liked it, there's just a sort of "silly" factor to her story that I couldn't get beyond. It's a book that definitely opens up good conversation though. I hope Classicfox enjoys it. Be well little book.

Edited again September of 2011 - post movie release:

A few members of my book club went to see the movie recently. I absolutely loved the movie! It was well cast, well executed and I'm so glad they gave the movie the "time" it needed to unfurl the story (the movie is long). Not only would I go see the movie again, it makes me want to re-read the book. I believe that the long gap between reading it and seeing this movie has served me well. Anyhow, go see the movie if you haven't already!

Great timing - this was the September book club book. A great read from a first time author - I laughed, I cried, I couldn't put it down! I agree with Poobah - discussing amongst my all women Fla book group gave me more insight into some of the characters, as we had differing opinions, esp on Hilly - was she just born mean? Product of her upbringing? So glad Skeeter skedaddles in the end - she just didn't fit in that town.

I'm at "the house that didn't sell" and have no wish to drag this book back to Philly with me, so will peruse wishlists/Rabck and send it on it's way to someone that I haven't rabck'd before.

I really liked this book. I was sucked in within the first few pages and I found it hard to put down. Great characters! The story takes place in Jackson, Mississippi during the civil rights era. Many of the maids were better educated than the white mistresses they were working for at less than minimum wages. I found myself rooting for the maids to get their stories told through the book without getting caught. I can see why this book has been chosen for book clubs.

Currently offering this book on the forums as a bookring. I hope to start it on its travels next week.

Journal Entry 16 by dabercro from Clinton, Utah USA on Sunday, March 21, 2010
I decided to make a bookring with this book. The rules are pretty basic.

1. Journal when you receive the book.
2. Journal your thoughts after you read the book.
3. Pm the next person on the list for their address then journal when you mail the book. Media mail is fine.

Please try to move the book on within a month. If you will be keeping it longer (life happens), please journal or pm me so that I know where the book is. Please be considerate of the people on the list after you who are still waiting to read this book.

Participant mailing order:

1. Aberpeter, WA
2. oldreader, CA
3. ravencat, NY
4. minesayn, OH
5. Agrace, TX --- asked to be skipped
6. elissamay, NY
7. kerbam1421, MA
8. GinnyRazo, CA
9. dabercro, UT

The book is back with me. Thank you to all who participated.

I read this book with a sense of dread. I dreaded the day Miss Hilly found out the book Help was about her and her friends and their black maids. I dreaded what would happen to Miss Skeeter when Miss Hilly put all those pieces together and figured out it was one of her friends who wrote the book. My heart went out to Aibileen and Minny and all the other maids who risked their jobs to tell their story - what it was to work for a white family in Jackson, Mississippi during the early 1960s. Although Katheryn Stockett took liberties with some of the historical references in the book (Shake and Bake wasn't around until 1965, etc), the overall theme of the novel was outstanding.

Although I did have a little difficulty with the dialect used I did enjoy the story on the whole. I admired the "help" for their courage to step up to the plate and tell their story even though they knew what the risks were. And I am glad that the author decided to have Skeeter go on to bigger and better things with her life and leaving the same feeling at the end with Aibileen. I have PM next person in line and as soon as I have the address it will be on its way. Thanks Poobah1 for sharing.

Didn't know quite what to expect with this book. Took a while to get used to the vernacular, but once I did, it was a very compelling read about life in the South nearly fifty years ago when most African-American women were basically maids and nannies to women who didn't appreciate them. And one woman who did and told some of their stories.
