This book was a bit nicey nicey for my liking, but can understand why other people like it so much.
This book has been registered to raise awareness of
LUCIA, a small charity which supports women and orphans in Ethiopia. BookCrossers around the world are taking part in a
challenge in September 2009, where we will be releasing hundreds of books with a word relating to women's roles in the title. If you would like to donate to this worthwhile charity, please

Sorry for sitting on this book for so long. Basically i've tried to read it but I keep picking up and putting it back down again because the oober sweetness of all the characters sets my teeth on edge a little. Will give it another go this week and then may just have to post it on without completing it. Thanks for your patience so far.

Forgot I signed up for this ray! It's joining it's compadres on the TBR shelf - and will be read soon. I think I read this as a preteen maybe? (Oodles of years ago!). Will see how the reading goes now as an adult. Sugariness in other j/e's noted!

It's now the train commute book. I can already say, it won't be a speed read - small print, lot of description.

This was written 140+ years ago, in what was the author's current day AND very US-centric in that the authors assumes you know that Father is off serving the union side of the Civil War. And she assumed that whomever read her book were the ones who could afford her book - the genteel ladies of the New England Society - so those customs weren't explained either.
It's also very heavily weighted to the Protestant religion - again, a predominant religion amongst the genteel of New England.
I enjoyed the book - I knew from my younger years that there wasn't much "action", just mostly a day to day account of the four March girls. I had forgotten (or maybe didn't notice) how they each identified their "faults" as was proper for gently reared ladies to do at the time, and work to remedy them so they would fit into the mold society dictated for them as wives and mothers.
Now the book is off to the UK for the next reader.
