Received this book today. I am very excited. Thank you.
This is an extremeely interesting history of slavery in the South. It traces the author's family's history of being plantation owners in South Carolina as well as the stories of the slaves that they owned. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks for the RABCK! It looks like an interesting read.
A fascinating look at the intertwining histories of both the slaveholders and slaves of one family in South Carolina. I learned so many things I didn't know about this dark period of my country's history.
I think the author did a good job dealing with his family's ugly past, and I was impressed with how many descendants of his family's slaves were willing to talk to him. Interesting, though, that many people in his family, especially older members, were uncomfortable with his project and would have rather he didn't take it on.
The only part of the author's attitude that really bothered me was a chapter about the "singing societies" of Charleston, groups of slaveholding families' descendants who perform the slave-era spirituals regularly, even going so far as to dress up in slave costumes and sing in Gullah (black dialect). He complimented the singers, and I wasn't sure if he was being polite or sincere, since I would have been horrified to witness such a performance as a white person.
The book was chosen in the most recent round of the nonfiction virtual bookbox, so it's on its way to Utah.
