What a wonderful surprise in my mailbox today! It arrived safely in a BC mailer - both book and mailer in perfect condition! I haven't purchased these yet so I was fascinated with the envelope first! lol.

Opening it to discover a wonderful biography of Katharine Hepburn just calling to be enjoyed. Immediately flipping through it glancing at the pictures. It has spiked my interest. We have all seen her movies at one point or another and I can't think of anyone who just doesn't love her. I'm looking forward to her story.

Thank you so much Chicagoguy5049 for surprising me. Doing the BC happy dance now! =D

I think everyone has seen a movie with this actress in it and can appreciate her talent. Because of the celebrity status, I will not review this as I would a regular read. Instead I will say that life stories can be interesting, can be insightful and can be a peek into a life we may not chose to live ourselves. Which is probably why celebrity lives intrigue us enought to read these biographies or to watch things on TV like Access Hollywood.

I must admit that I am not a huge reader of biographies. That said, I have read this little by little. Some parts were skimmed and some parts were read with a little more enthusiasm. All-in-all an interesting read which I think should be enjoyed by all who pick it up.

Thank you! I like biographies - and for some reason thought I had read or had this one. Nope - so it's going on the TBR pile and I have a couple of new readers for this book in mind when I'm done.

rabck from dvg; autobiography of Katharine Hepburn. An unconventional actress, the chapters are different chains of thought about her life and career. I knew about Spencer Tracy, but never realized that she had been married and that she had been involved with Howard Hughes also.

Looking forward to reading this book I received today as part of booklady331's ABC VBB Round 19, and giving further attention to the black and white photographs I noticed as I did a quick flip through. THANK YOU for sending it, NancyNova!!! : )

From Amazon...

Admired and beloved by movie audiences for more than sixty years, four-time Academy Award winner Katharine Hepburn is an American classic and an extraordinary, enduring presence on the international cultural scene. Yet her private life has been obscured by mystery. Now Miss Hepburn breaks her long-kept silence in this absorbing and provocative memoir.

With characteristic gusto and candor, Katharine Hepburn reflects on the events, people, and places that have shaped her life—her childhood and family, her early days in New York, and her experiences with political activism. She talks about the ups and downs of her career, her long friendship with Spencer Tracy, and of course, her close collaborations with several of the leading actors, directors, and producers of the past half century. Illustrated with 165 photographs from family archives, many of which have never been published, it is an unforgettable portrait of Katharine Hepburn as we have not seen her before.

HERE, HERE...to an atypical biography!!! LOVE that the writing style of this book is true to self Katharine's and Katherine's alone. I am ALLLways far less concerned with perfect grammar and punctuation, or following editorial RULES of a particular writing style for a particular project no matter what aspect it may be...layout...format...blah...blah...blah...and...DID YOU KNOW, that ALL CAPS, does NOT necessarily mean someone is YELLing at you....WHAT a NOVel CONcept...eh?!?!? It could mean they're exCITed, overly enthusiAStic, perhaps wanting to draw aTTENtion to something aka acCENtuate it, perhaps show some personALity, or SPEAKing style...or no less that DOZen OTHER things. When you are not WITH someone, and only reading what someone WRITES, words often fall short of being able to get a sense of really KNOWing who the person really IS...their HEART...their SOUL. One gets no sense of personality or humanness when always focused on the “rules” English Professors focus on. Clearly, English Grammar Rules and Usage, even SPELLing...along with Rogers Rules of Order, are not always a reflection upon an individual's intellect, eSPEcially if they are suffering from personality or behavior changes due to life trauma, traumatic injury, or the diseases related to the aging process...get a grip, people. Perhaps the “rules” are even being broken intentionally, so as to invoke an out of the norm response from the reader...LOVE doing that!!! Brings a whole other level of feeling out of a person perpetually stuck in a rut. Katharine's “ME”writing style makes one feel as if they are sitting in a room with her, getting to hear the stories of her life over a cup of afternoon tea, not necessarily in a hum drum chronological way, but in a friendly personable unpretentious down-home manner, which I found to be the perfect “style” for a book she was writing about herself. As evident in the following excerpt from Chapter 1...she was quite up front from the beginning about making certain to let you know that...[“Before I tell you anything about myself, I would like to tell you, or at least identify for you, the world into which I was born. My background. I mean of course my mother-my father. My two parents.”] I also LOVE that the family and other photos she shared, were left in their original black and white format and not colorized. They were indicative of the time period, and made the book all the more authentic. The world is full of people who are quick to pass judgment and express their expectations in regards to what a given thing must have or not have to be acceptable to THEM....I say HOGWASH...the world does not revolve around any one person!!! Thanks for being YOU, Katharine...and sharing with us the intimate and personal details of your life that you were comfortable with sharing...the bits and pieces of joy and sorrow of a life only you could live...WELL DONE!!!
