First published in 1992, I'm still trying to find the Carla Kelly tha tpeople rave about.

Second book I've read by Kelly, I think, and I understand a bit better what the fuss is about. Very charming story, lovely characters, amusing, very quick read.
(From Goodreads: Disguised as her own brother in order to realize her dream of attending the male-only Oxford University, Miss Ellen Grimsley finds her cover blown when a handsome lord, himself disguised as a humble scholar, falls in love with her.) What this review doesn't say is that she really only dares because she ends up having to help her brother out by doing his assignments for him...

A rather pleasing piece, although this should be labelled something like fantasy historical romantic fiction, not just historical romance. (Eg bridesmaids in matching dresses in Regency times? The heroine writing applause-worthy essays with no training? A woman's college at Oxford, basically in Regency times?) But the writing is amusing and the ending is happy, so I enjoyed it.
I'll keep this in the Of Duchesses, Princesses & Other Ladies of Quality: HISTORICAL ROMANCE bookbox as I've finished it already.

Will read and pass on! :)

Hmmm. A bit dated, and very fluffy. I found the fact that Ellen only snuck into the University to do her brother's work, not to study (as hinted by the book description), disappointing.
I prefer my romances with a bit more oomph, but at least this was a quick easy read!

Posted to Minerva101 today - one of their picks from the first sentences VBB.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
This book arrived today along with my other selection. I'm not sure what I was expecting based on the first sentence, but this took me by surprise :)
Generally, I avoid reading serial-type romances (i.e. harlequin, zebra, signet, etc) and wild release them instead, but I'll toss this onto Mt. TBR for a day when I am needing some fluff.
Thanks for the fun, Lemon-Crisis :)

Seems like a nice fluffy read. Picked up at the march Calgary Bookcrossing meetup. This entry is a few weeks late. Oops!
This was a really cute romance. I wanted a light read and finished it in an evening.
Will be shared at this week’s Calgary bookcrossing meetup.

Picked this up at the September meetup at Cravings. Excellent turnout!!
What a fun romance and women's rights book. We've come a long way baby.
Time to take my sack full of books to the November meetup at Cravings Restaurant and find a new reader for each of them.
Picked up at our November meeting, we had 15 BookCrossers in attendance and so many books!
I really enjoyed this one, I just wanted some fluff and that is what I got. I liked that this one was somewhat smart so that some of the things that could have been really stupid were explained well (example being how she could wear her brothers robes).
Are you in the Calgary area and interested in meeting up with other Calgary BookCrossers? Please check out our facebook group, "BookCrossing Calgary" for details on how. Meeting are held on the second Saturday of every month starting at 11am. Location is unknown, please PM me for information. New Crossers are always welcome.
Taking this to our January meeting where this book will hopefully find a new reader.

Safely in my hands
I thoroughly enjoyed this cheesy looking book! I actually loved the cover after reading the book....the small, print the old pages, just a wonderful experience.
And the story was funny and smart. I like the characters and some of the crazy thinking back then...page 28....”Dr Spender Chumley over in Larch lectured on the subject of females damaging their brains with overmuch study...He claims that the brain enlarged and creates a curiously shaped head that is not attractive in any way “. Thank heavens for women like Ellen that have fought for women’s rights to study and learn!

With the covid19 pandemic we haven’t been meeting as a group as we are all practicing social distancing. Sing song so kindly offered to pick up Costco groceries and delivered them, along with some books for me. She also took some of mine, this being one of them!
Received in a porch exchange. Thank you sing-song.
This is an entertaining book filled with snarky asides and cruel insults delivered with impeccable Regency era English. Makes me wish Jane Austen wrote more books.
Book released in a porch drop-off.
Book to be returned to megami-no-ushi.
