It’s a very touching, disturbing story, told in very simple prose – reflecting the naïve, innocent view of a nine-year-old. For the knowledgeable reader this of course evokes horrible images and I think this contrast makes the book work and have quite an emotional impact.
Anyway, the meeting of the two boys is totally unrealistic - with all the watch towers, fences etc. it simple wasn’t possible for two boys to meet like this. But Boyne called it a fable after all. Still, it somehow bothered me that lots of historical facts were wrong and Boyne can’t have done much research. For example there weren’t hundreds of children in Auschwitz, most were killed right away. And a nine-year-old son of a high-ranking Nazi who didn’t know the word “Führer” and hadn’t heard about Jews? No way. The author should have made him a six-year-old.
It certainly is an important read for 12-year-old kids. I suppose that’s about the age group it is directed at, but of course the impact is a different one on adults. And as it is written in such a simple, clear language non-native speakers won’t have much trouble understanding it.

8 out of 10

This book was certainly written for young readers, but like many good 'children's books' it is also very interesting and touching to read for mature readers.

The story is that of a nine years old boy, Bruno, whose father has been appointed 'commandant' to the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz and who has to move with his family from Berlin to "Out-with", as Bruno calls it, totally unaware of what is going on around him. Bruno eventually meets Shmuel, a jewish boy from Cracow of his age living the other side of the fence and always wearing the same striped pyjamas.

This imagined story of Bruno and Shmuel sheds light on the brutality, senselessness and devastating consequences of war from an unusual point of view.

This is a both a touching and disturbing book, sometimes even funny and very easy to read.

Very touching story, well written and easy to read. I have visited Auschwitz and it made the book even more realistic for me. Really good book, maybe I'll buy it for my Permanent Collection...

Now the book is on it's way to the next one!

Once I started this book, I finished in two sit downs. Very quick and easy read, even though the subject matter isn't light. Maybe not 100% believable but for a 12 year old audience, not sure if I would have liked a believeable story about Auschwitz. Saw the ending coming, liked it anyways. Thanks for sharing, will pass on when I get the next people's address.

There is an important message here, very educational, but the "voice" seems to be too young for the target audience and the 9 year old main character is more like a 6 year old. It is very sad though.
