Daniel finds out that he's a Mischling, "half-human" - meaning half Jewish. This leads to lots of trouble for Daniel and his family in 1930s Germany.
There are a lot of things in this book that made me uncomfortable to say the least (the whole classroom scene about racial purity, for instance), but I think books like this should be viewed as inoculations against the "pestilence" Daniel's mother refers to in this book...even if the title makes me cringe.
That this book was originally published in German is really something.
