This was a great book that I just couldn't put down once I started it. It was so complelling and yet harrowing as it was based on a true story. The thought of a man like O'Kane living in the world sends shivers down my spine.

Thanks so much for the book Shel, I really enjoyed it.

Reading while working in the CNDR - read this in only two days and like Danielle23 i found the style and content compelling. The book really imparted the urgency and unpredictability of O'Kanes actions and it made for tense reading - all the more so since it was based on a true story. Very good and definately deserving of a place on the 1001 books list.

Now available to a good home upon request.

Arrived safe and sound x

25 Jan 10 - Finished this book this morning and like the rest of you could not put it down (hence a bit late for work!!). I loved the way the book was written with each chapter from from a different perspective, it made for a very tense read. Shocking that people like this live in the world and worrying that the police were too scared to do anything for a while, maybe living in a little village is not such a good idea!! Think I will pass it to my mum, its her kind of book.

Passed to my mum, hope she enjoys it x

Thought this looked familiar when i visited my elderly aunt today, appears my mum has had this one for a while before taking it into her. Will send it on soon.

3 Nov 16 - when I looked this up, I found I had rated it quite highly, but being years later couldn't really remember much about it, so though I would give it a reread. And I still rate it the same, a griping book looking into the mind of a killer.

"Darkness is drawn to light but light does not know it, light must absorb the darkness and therefore meet its own extinguishment."

This is a grim tale but the author's economic and at times lyrical style means that she manages to portray the horror whilst avoiding glamorising violence. So much so that I ended feeling almost as sorry for the the murderer, who was badly failed by the authorities, as I did the victims. This is my first O'Brien book and I enjoyed her writing style. I found it hard to put down once I got into it yet somehow felt that it lacked that little something which would have really made it stand out in a crowd.

Wow, what a book?! The fact that its based on a true story is rather sad though. O'Brien's writing style is one that I like and can really get along with. I found it easy to get into this book and just wanted to know what was going to happen and how it would end. O'Kane was failed by the system and that had an impact on his life in a negative way. So so unfortunate.
Not quite 5 stars but a very decent 4/5.
