This was absolutely delightful! I loved the way the story was told through all those gorgeous letters. It was interesting finding out about the German occupation of Guernsey. I know very little about that part of the world and was horrified thinking about those poor people and what they must have gone through all those years ago. Thank you so much house-elfdobby for sending this to me. I loved it. I am so sorry it had to end for I still want to know what's going to happen next ....... :)

Thanks so much for sharing Carole, I will put it in my pile of things to pack tonight & hopefully read it on my holiday at the end of next week :-)

Journal Entry 7 by Blundery on Thursday, December 03, 2009

This book has not been rated.

Well with all the goings on in my life, it took me forever to find the time to start this book. However, once I started I was totally hooked. What a wonderful collection of characters and a fabulously successful way to present them all (via letters, notes and telegrams). I felt as though I knew so many of them by the books end. I have developed a new interest in Guernsey, and have added it to my list of places I would like to visit. And my ongoing facination with the people's experiences in WWII has been reignited with a whole new area of research and investigation :-)

I enjoyed this book so much that I read it very slowly because I didn't want it to end. Although, about the ending...... I did feel that it sort of 'stopped' a bit suddenly after being so lyrical throughout, and then I read that the author became ill and died soon after the book was finished so I wonder if her co-author had more creative input towards the end which allowed it to (only slightly) lose some of the magic right at the end. But in saying all that, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a great story.

I see this is on many wish lists, so I will pack it into my suitcase (again) and relocate to another bookcrosser on the east coast when I head over there next week for christmas, because I know that she will love it and then send it on for others to appreciate.

thanks for forwarding this book to me Carole, I really loved it!

What a wonderful story. This is the first time I've ever read a book that is made up of letters only, the letters made the story seem so personal & made me feel like I knew the letter writers so well, I could picture each of them in my mind. I was a little sorry about how the tale ended but that may be because I didn't want it to end.

I will pass this on to l1nda in a day or so.

This is an absolutely delightful book and a great one to share amongst people who enjoy reading. I really love those stories of people who have found solace in reading during difficult times. Other books that come to mind are Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones and even Sorry by Gail Jones (both Jones what a coincidence). This book also, reminded me that I have a copy of Elizabeth and her German Garden here somewhere and the character Elizabeth has made me really want to read it now, eventhough the GLAPPP Society didn't really read it themselves ;-)

Aren't the letters a clever device for telling the story. It really worked for me. Just loved peaking into these lovely Guernsey character's lives through their correspondence with one another. Some of them reminded me of my long passed English Granny, she would have fitted right in :-)
I really devoured it straight away and was so sorry to leave Guernsey at the end.

Lovely,
Thank you for sending me this delightful book as a RABK and making it an ex-wishlist book. I just love your reading taste.
I wonder if it is worth trying to bake a Potato Peel Pie, it actually sounded quite scrumptious!
Promise I won't send you a piece in the mail, it doesn't sound like it would travel well :-)

8 out of 10

The book is a great read. But I must admit I began reading it with negative thoughts because of its style and it took me about 30 pages to change my prejudiced mind and begin to enjoy it. Then I thought it was great and was sorry when it came to an end. Funny characters I would love to see translated into a TV series. I enjoyed the first half the best as I thought the humour was strongest there.
This book has accompanied me during two weeks of travelling and filled in evenings in Eumundi, Warwick, Glen Innis, Bellingen and I finished it tonight in Taree.
I am travelling back to Canberra with the book to pass it onto someone at the BookCrossing meet.

I am lending the book. It will be returned to me to take along to the BookCrossing meet in Canberra.

Just loved this book - it was funny, sad, surprising all at once. I didn't know anything about the German occupation in Guernsey. I also loved that Dawsey finds a book Juliet used to own, and he writes to her - bookcrossing!!
Will take this back to the next Canberra meet up (probably July) for someone else to read.

8 out of 10

Hooray! The book finally arrived today. I was quite relieved because I'm still waiting for a book from France, which was posted three weeks earlier than this one ... Thank you, goldenwattle, for sending it and also for the sweet postcard. Going through the JEs for this book got my quite in the mood of going to Australia - it looks like there are so many nice bookcrossers there!
At the moment, I'm still reading "The Angel's Game" by Carlos Ruiz Zafon (which, by the way, I can only recommend) but "Guernsey" will be the very next after that. I've heard so many good things about this book that I'm very much looking forward to reading it.
Thanks again for sharing it!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Thank you so much for sharing this book. I knew very little of the German occupation of the Channel Islands. I finished the book while skiing in Austria over New Year's. At the end, I just couldn't stop reading. I quite enjoyed the Juliet & Dawsey turn of events (am also a big fan of the Elizabeth & Darcy story :-)). I liked it so much that I reread that part the next morning. I am very fond of women who take matters into their own hands (like Juliet with her proposal).
I thought that Guernsey sounded like a wonderful place to visit and immediately suggested it to my husband for a future trip. On the plane trip back from Austria he then pointed out an article in the airplane magazine to me called "Sping already sprung on Guernsey" promoting the island as quite a must-visit! Coincidence?
The book is now off to laure69 in France. Enjoy!

What a nice book !
Maybe a little too many happy ends (is it possible to tell a story without a wedding ?) but it doesn't matter. It's very interesting to see how the war was in such a little island. I went once to Guernsey and liked it. I usually like epistolary novels and found this style very convenient here.

The look left for seayork2002 yesterday

Journal Entry 35 by PeaMartian at Durham, County Durham United Kingdom on Monday, July 25, 2011

This book has not been rated.

This is a great book - thank you so much for sharing! As you can see from the JE dates it took me a while to get down to reading this book, but once I started it I simply didn't stop until I got to the end (with a brief overnight break for sleep - I don't read that fast)!

*Spolier alert, but only on page 9 of the book, so not really giving anything away*
I love the style of the book, and the way that the personalities of the characters really do come through their writing styles and the things they choose to write about. I liked the book right from the start, because it has a map in the front, and I am a sucker for maps. But I knew that I was going to love it when I read this on page 9, in a letter from Juliet to Dawsey:

"I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some secret sort of homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers. How delightful if that were true."

This almost perfectly sums up the thing that intrigues me about Bookcrossing. I've discovered so many great books through the kindness of other bookcrossers, and found my mind being lead to new parts of the world and new experiences through them and the books we share. Through this book I have spent time in my mind in WWII and on Guernsey, and feel richer for the experience.

Thanks again for sharing this book with me. I'm posting it on to WelshHelen today...

10 out of 10

What a fantastic book, my first 10 out of 10 of the year and one of the best books I've ever read. Though I knew of the Occupation of the Channel Islands (mainly through the TV series Island at War and Enemy at the Door) I didn't really realise the terrible hardship and cruelty that the Islanders endured.

This story is told with humour, love and gratitude through multiple letters, all of which bring the characters to life. A part of me wishes that this was a true story so that I knew that at least some of the people had happy lives after the Germans left.

I laughed out loud, I smiled, I cried, I loved (virtually) every character and I didn't want the book to finish. Thank you so, so much for sharing, Goldenwattle and all the previous readers. I've pmd Libera13 and will post on as soon as I have an address.
