"From the dark heart of a Victorian prison, disgraced spiritualist Selina Dawes weaves an enigmatic spell. Is she a fraud or a prodigy? By the time it all begins to matter, you'll find yourself desperately wanting to believe in magic."
I bought this book here in the UK because I really loved "Tipping the velvet" (in German) and I've also seen "Fingersmith" (the film) which I found amazing.
Unfortunately most of the book just scared me (it's really easy to scare me; it's a miracle that I read a ghost story at all). But I was curious how the story continues, so I didn't even think about stopping to read. The love story that developed between the two women was so delicate, it was absolutely fascinating how small gestures like a touch at one's hand can mean so much if it's the most you can expect.
Towards the end the story became more and more exciting and I couldn't stop reading. But I was not expecting the twist at the end at all. Absolutely stunning and surprising.
A praise for the book I totally agree with: "'Indeed, this is such a brilliant writer that her readers would believe anything she told them.' A.N.Wilson, Daily Mail" That's exactly how I felt while reading this.
Edit [14.05.2009]: I'd like this book to travel around. Since there were several people who are interested I'd like to send it as a ray. Is that alright with you?

Received on Saturday. I've just started a book so I'll read this one next. Thanks for sharing - I'm looking forward to this one.
I can't make my mind up about this book! I really like Sarah Water's style but sometimes find the subjects difficult to engage with - Spiritual things are not really my cup of tea so on the odd occasion I found myself willing the plot on but I liked the details about the prison and the prisoners. I have 'Tipping the Velvet' on the way as part of a ring so it will be interesting to see how the two books compare.
I have details for chucklesthescot so will take this book to the post office tomorrow. Thanks for sharing :)

Thank you for the book which arrived today. I hadn't realised that it was the book of the recent TV series which was quite good. I look forward to reading this one and will try to pass it on in another ray or bookbox to keep it moving.
Didn't get a chance to read this so I'm moving it on

Thanks again.
Have just finished reading this , my second Sarah Water's book. Not sure I liked it as much as Fingersmith but was definately a close second.
The first half of the book dragged somewhat but by the end I could barely put it down. ..The twists & turns which point out the obvious (after the fact) are amazing. Yes, Sarah Waters CAN make you believe anything.... Very good read...
