There's a tangled trip down Memory Lane in this implacably memorable volume, the opulent opener of The Alexandria Quartet. A pullulating city, as well as its poet Kadafy, has bided its time for me all those years!

NOTE: Cover not as shown above -- mine is the hand-printed Faber PB original.

Thank you Dunzy! I've been wanting to read this for a while. Alexandria became familiar to me through the work of a greek novelist, Stratis Tsirkas; a trilogy named Drifting Cities. Looking forward to Durrell's version.
I love this copy's cover!

It took me a very long time to read this book. I tried a couple of times but couldn't follow the storyline, since I had a hard time concentrating. The last time I persisted - the long commutes to work helped, although I know I missed a lot of details I could have looked up if I had access to a computer. The plot still gave me a hard time, but I loved the atmosphere. I know I have to read the rest of the quartet to solve the puzzle and I'm not sure when I'll be able to tackle the next volume, so it looks like those cliffhangers will be there for me for a while. I very much enjoyed finding similarities between Justine and the first volume of Drifting Cities (The Club). It seemed to me there was some sort of conversation between the books. Later I found out that Tsirkas (author of Drifting Cities) had read the Quartet and was considering writing his own version, a completely different point of view. So this was a lot of fun. Looking forward to the rest of the story.

Left over book from the BC Athens Convention.
Happy reading !
