When rebuilding my bookshelves, I realized my books had been accumulating without me knowing it and collected a pile of spare books I really don’t need to read. Mrs. Pollifax Unveiled is one of them.
I’ve read a few Mrs. Pollifax books and I think I already know what they are like. The NYT Book Review is right about the relaxed style and easy going way Dorothy Gilman writes. Her novels are entertaining, humorous, easy read, and real page-turners. And Emily Pollifax is a regular Miss Marple but more active and energetic.
It’s Gilman’s more or less explicit political agenda that I’m not too fond of. I mean, it would be interesting to read a thriller in which some traditional villains—you know the sort: Arabs, Asians, Russians, Germans, etc.—were he good guys for a change and Americans or British were wrong-doers. I’m afraid Dorothy Gilman isn’t going to be the one to write that book. — Or who am I to say so — perhaps she takes the radical turn in this very story...
However, I think I might wanna read this one if I didn’t have sooo many other books waiting to be read.
This mystery novel was one of the books offered in the ekan lauseen vappuräpäkki (The May Day First Sentence RABCK) where Finnish BC’ers were told not the titles but the first sentences of the novels offered.
The first sentence in Mrs. Pollifax Unveiled—and this time with the real name—is,
’Mrs. Pollifax was feeling bored and rather left out of life.’
The book was won by thy. Congrats!

I had not met Mrs Pollifax before, and yes, she is a very energetic woman and the book was easy to read.
I do have a problem with this book, does it tell enough about Syria so that it could represent Syria in 'book from every country' challence.. haven't decided yet.

Book was sent to Annelis who had this book on her wishlist

Thank you very much for the book, Thy!
I don't understand either, how Mrs Gilman can imagine that anybody would willingly risk his or her life for CIA or other organisations like that. But Mrs Pollifax is always ready to go and leave husband and everything. This spoils otherways so entertaining books. Still I like to read Mrs Pollifax going to different places. It is only too bad that people in those countries are crooks or terrorists even.

It is been a while since I read about Mrs. Pollifax. This time I was not so much disturbed by CIA. Syria is very much in the news now because of the civil war. I wonder how it will end.
Syria is a country where women have no value. The kidnappers did not bother to take Mrs. Pollifax because women know nothing anyway. Well, well, It is no place for me to visit even then in the peacetime.
