One that I started on but needed a lighter book.
amazon notes :
A truly remarkable tour de force, both as a novel and as a translation by Sheila Fischman The story is told by a child who has been brought up in a cabin by a deranged father in the Canadian wilds. The child has simply never met anyone from outside the little family, and speaks an extraordinary language based on the father's limited conversation and a motley selection of books in the cabin. The story opens on the day the two siblings discover that their father has hanged himself. Now they will be forced into contact with the villagers beyond their little universe. They will discover the startling truth about the world outside -- and the world outside will discover the even more startling truth about them and their history. Hypnotic, powerful, playful, utterly suspenseful, this is an amazing novel that has been a major bestseller in Canada.

A truly disturbing book - this was very dark. The narrator writes this story with a language that comes only from books and the father that has kept his family from the outside world - and this makes it difficult to follow at times. There are several twists and turns in this novel and I don't want to spoil it for the rest of the bookring.

Wow. This was horrific and disturbing and beautiful at the same time and I loved it. I read this in one day, but the story hasn't really left me yet. I still find myself thinking about it. Even though the language was a bit hard to get used to at first, it was something that I really admired about the novel. Even though it was one of the creepiest things I've read in a long time, I found parts of the story to be very moving and beautiful. I found myself being repulsed by the narrator at times, but ultimately liked her spirit. Thanks for sharing this intriguing read! I am waiting for an address and will send it off as soon as I get it.
