8 out of 10

From our favourite second-hand bookshop.

Very different to the film! At the most basic level, the plot is the same - a small group of rebels trying to resist a totalitarian government (and [spoiler follows, highlight to read] protect the first pregnant woman in over 20 years) in a world where humans have become sterile - but the details are very very different.

The book is much denser, more political, and (as is usually true of novels compared to their film adaptation) more intimately involved in the inner thoughts of the main character. The motivations of the characters aren't quite as clear-cut as in the film. Which of course, makes it much more interesting, though the payback is that it's sometimes a harder slog than the simpler movie version. Good book, though.

I have seen the movie and it will be interesting to see the difference between the movie and the book.
