Journal Entry 1 by PHC from Richmond, Virginia USA on Monday, May 26, 2003
What’s a bookring and how does it work? [thanks to pgsahm~ slightly altered, since this is a bookring] A bookring is when a book passes from person to person based on the list of members involved. Then returned to the original owner. To join this bookring (or any other bookring of mine) please private message me. I will be glad to add you to the list. New members are added all of the time so be sure to check the list of participants before you mail the book to the next in line just in case! Once you are a bookring member you will receive the book from the person listed before you. When you receive the book please make a journal entry stating that you’ve received it. Then read it as soon as you can, and journal again with your thoughts. You’ll need to private message the person on the list after you for their address. Mail the book by media mail (it’s cheaper!), and make release notes on the book only if you’d like to. Then sit back and watch the continuing journey! ------------------------------------- * Please PM the next person in line when you receive the book. That way when you are finished reading it, hopefully you will have the info you need to send it on without waiting. If you have not heard from them in 10 days, please PM the next in line. * Please do not hold onto the book longer than 30 days. [Of course, if you finish it in 3, by all means, send it on!! ] * I recommend you use some sort of tracking [usa has 'Delivery Confirmation' for 55 cents~ I am not sure what other countries have available to them] * If you are last on the list, please PM me, to make sure no one else has expressed interest. * Enjoy! PM me if you would like to be added to the list. Journal Entry 13 by Robbiesmum from Thirsk, North Yorkshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 24, 2003
This was such an inspiring read. I sat huddled in my dressing gown and read and read. I am glad I approached this after The Lovely Bones as I can now see where her hurt came from. This should be passed on to students starting university to show you you do need to be aware. It is also a courageous story which tells you that standing up and speaking out CAN get a conviction. And yet, that experience has always followed Alice. It seems terrible to think of her early twenties. But now she is finding success as a writer, and has learned to write from her traumas in life. It's an excellent lesson. It's a well written memoir, similar to Andrea Ashworth or Jennifer Lauck, and a readable style whicch keeps you turning the pages. I'm very glad I've taken part in this bookring. On to talkland.

Journal Entry 15 by talkland from Eastbourne, East Sussex United Kingdom on Monday, October 06, 2003
Sexual violence is an awful experience and is far more common than supposed. Alice Sebold book is a powerful memoir about how an assault of this kind effected not only herself but those around her. Alice was lucky. She was lucky to not be killed. She was lucky to have people around her who helped her deal with the rape. She was lucky to secured a conviction. However, much of the aftermath to the rape was not just down to luck but her strength and resolve. It did f*** her up but her story shows that you can make it though and come out the other side. It also shows how different people deal with trauma. Having been a victim sexual violence myself I did find this hard to read but I am glad I did.
