8 out of 10

This is the second novel offering from academic and former-Sydney Uni lecturer, David Malouf. He has taken the historical figure of Ovid and instead of aiming to create a historical-fiction; he has aimed to create possible events for the last few years of the poet's life, whilst delving into much deeper, contemporary topics.

Ovid has been exiled to the distant village of Tomis. He has not just been exiled from everything he's ever known but from the known existence itself, the Roman Empire. His unfamiliar surroundings and inability to communicate with the people around him initially overwhelm him. What he doesn't know is that, far removed from the Roman-world he'll become reacquainted with something from his childhood. Over time he learns the language and culture of the village and begins to integrate into its society. During the annual autumn hunt, Ovid encounters a wild-child. He believes the Child is the same one from his childhood and that by capturing it he'll be able to communicate with it much the same way he did as a child. Two years later, his wish is granted and he succeeds in having the Child captured. He attempts to teach the Child intelligible language but what he doesn't realise is that the Child has been sent to teach him, not the other way around.

Malouf has created a raw yet beautifully poetic novel. Malouf has artfully (almost cryptically) delved into the contemporary arguments "How does one determine barbarian and civil" and "How to inhabit a place without occupying it"? More powerfully, he shows how one man can loose himself in while being a member of a prestigious society yet discover himself on the outside of the known world and know the life he is supposed to live.

Nefertari112 and I both tried to read this, and neither of us could finish it. Our shared opinion - this is boring, self-indulgent crap. I think that since we are both fans of ancient history we had hoped for more... or perhaps we are just Philistines. Hopefully this book will be found by someone who will appreciate it!
