From Amazon:

A new look for one of Diana Wynne Jones' funniest and most popular novels. In the land of Ingary, where seven league boots and cloaks of invisibility do exist, Sophie Hatter catches the unwelcome attention of the Witch of the Waste and is put under a spell. Deciding she has nothing more to lose, she makes her way to the moving castle that hovers on the hills above Market Chipping. But the castle belongs to the dreaded Wizard Howl whose appetite, they say, is satisfied only by the souls of young girls! There she meets Michael, Howl's apprentice, and Calcifer the Fire Demon, with whom she agrees a pact. But Sophie isn't the only one under a curse - her entanglements with Calcifer, Howl, and Michael, and her quest to break her curse is both gripping - and howlingly funny!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I actually preferred the movie, but perhaps that is because I saw it before I read the book and I am such a huge fan of Hayao Miyazaki's work!

A gift for the winner of my Young Adult RABCK

Thank you for the surprise wishlist RABCK! I wasn't expecting you to send me so many books...what fun! I can already tell I'm going to like the illustrations in this one.

Here's another copy on my shelf...and one more.

Illustrations by Tim Stevens.

A fun ride: I'd forgotten the bit about where Howl originally came from but it was an interesting twist. I'm glad the story explains that 7 leagues is 21 miles; I wouldn't have known that otherwise.

Picked up today at TOC lunch. Will read and pass along. Thank you for sharing!

Have not seen this movie, but can imagine animation would be the only way to do this story justice.

Sophie Hatter, as the eldest of three daughters, believes her destiny will be boring. But soon she is cursed by the Witch of the Waste and seeks shelter in Howl's castle, despite his reputation as a wicked warlock. The castle's magic enables its one door to open to different locations, including Sophie's village, the royal kingdom, and the strange land where Howl was born. Sophie soon learns that the mysterious happenings in all these locations are interrelated.

Reserved for fireyfairy.

Mailed 2/1/12.

I am so terribly sorry for not having journaled this book sooner! It was on top of a stack of books on my desk, and it fell behind and was wedged between the desk and the wall until today. I deeply apologize! I will be reading it shortly. Thank you so much for sending it.
