I'm not quite sure what to say about this book. It's really quite different to other books that I've read in that the central character is so different. Really enjoyed it and can understand why it made the top 100 books some time ago (which is partly why I decided to read it).

Am thinking I should do something different with this - maybe a bookray or ring. Will take advice from more experienced bookcrossers on what to do...

Journal Entry 5 by shakeyerbooty on Friday, June 12, 2009
Very good read indeed! Incredibly descriptive and unusual story with an unexpected and rather gruesome ending. I thoroughly enjoyed this and struggled to put it down. Thanks for the bookring Cassandra2020.

to everyone in this book ring - apologies as i am causing a hold up but i have been whisked off to run a site and am not living at home at the moment. Plus i am working compulsory overtime which means that I am incapable of keeping my eyes open past half nine at night! Sorry to people who are desperate to read this, i will try to read it and post it asap.

good book although it took me a while to get into. Grenouille is a truly disturbing character and the descriptions of his physical appearance and his attitudes are well done and lend to the sinister and macabre, almost animal-like qualities of his character. Glad to have read it but probably would not rush to recommend it, although maybe thats just because the story was not quite as i expected it to be.

Thanks to Cassandra2020 for organising this ring. Having heard about this book I was really intrigued to read it myself and it didn't disappoint. The detail in which the scents are described throughout almost make them seem to jump of the page, so that you feel like you can actually smell them. The character of Grenouille although very dark is in a strange way also quite fascinating, so part of you isn't sure how you should really feel about him.

Just posted on to KingFan30. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

Book has arrived safe and sound. I have another two rays to get through first, but seem to be averaging a book a week so should not be too long. Thanks for including me.

Really enjoyed this book apart from the ending. It was not that it was gruesome (I have read worse) it just did not seem to fit quite right with the story for me. I loved the descriptions of the making of perfume and Grenouille was really quite disturbing. Am waiting to hear from sarkiegirl so that I can pass it on.

An interesting book. I agree that Suskind is a very descriptive author. He did a fantastic job of describing France circa 1700s. Grenouille was a very interesting character. The use of scent as a motive for crime kept the plot moving and was an interesting plot device. I agree that this is one of the books that I have really enjoyed from the 1001 list. Thanks once again for sharing with me.

Reserved for the BO: 1001 Books VBB until December 2010. If no one claims it, it will be RABCK to a person who is trying to read the 1001 Books... but is not part of the library because they cannot afford the postage.
