"Alyss, born in Wonderland, is destined to be a warrior queen. After a bloody coup topples the Heart regime, Alyss is exiled to another world entirely, where she is adopted into the Liddell family, renamed Alice and befriended by Lewis Carroll. At age 20 she returns to Wonderland to regain her sceptre, battle Redd and lead Wonderland into its next golden age of imagination."

I was intrigued by the concept of this book and the mixed reviews that it got from general readers and Alice in Wonderland enthusiasts. Overall, I would say this was an entertaining book. I have to admit that Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite books and therefore I tend to be slightly more picky than I would be with other retellings. Having said that, I think this was a fun retelling of a classic novel, adding science fiction to the mix. The recasting of familiar characters was also interesting, plotting them against each other in a political climate similar of us v. them. Where the book lost points is in the writing style of the author. The tone is too informal and the language too simplistic. While it could have been done to parallel Lewis Carrol's own misbelief in Alyss' story, it didn't add to the book.
I look forward to seeing how this book plays out in the rest of the saga. Going to Loriped as part of the Bookobsessed Fantasy Swap.

"Anyway -- because we are readers, we don't have to wait for some communications executive to decide what we should think about next -- and how we should think about it. We can fill our heads with anything from aardvarks to zucchinis -- at any time of night or day."

Received this book in the mail today. I look forward to reading it especially since we just watched Burton's Alice In Wonderland.
