It is a paperback edition with 262 pages.

From its cover:
A young writer, struggling for success, employs an elderly woman called Emerence to be her houskeeper. From their first encounter it is clear that Emerence is no ordinary maid. Although everyone in the neighbourhood knows and respects her, no one knows anything about her private life or has ever crossed her threshold. Only a great drama in the writer's life prompts Emerence to unveil glimpses of her traumatic past - a past which sheds light on her peculiar behaviour.
"The Door" brilliantly evokes the development of the bond between these two very different women, and the tragic ending to their relationsghip.

Magda Szabó was a Hungarian writer, this story is one of her best works.

Thanks so much.Book arrived today along with about 15 others so I must be the April Smile Day Sweepstakes winner. This is so exciting, all those books from all over the world and no two the same. Bookcrossing is the best hobby.
This selection is so much like one I would pick myself, women and relationships are my favorite stories and I love that you choose a Hungarian author. I find one of the best parts of bookcrossing is getting to read writings from other countries. The stickers and stationary were a special touch. Thanks again.

I finally read this great book. The writing is excellent and right from the beginning the writer draws the reader in so we feel her pain and torment. The story of a young writer and her 20 year relationship with her elderly housekeeper. Emerence, the housekeeper is a strong character who reveals her life to her employer in small fragments and we begin to understand why she thinks and acts the way she does. She has many relationships with members of the community yet she opens her door to nobody, instead entertains on her porch. Over the years a bond develops between the two women but is never expressed coming to a sad ending. As a dog owner I liked the relationship of Emerence and the dog, Viola, she wasn't the owner but it was clear Viola considered her to be.
Thanks again for sending me this great book. I'll look for another reader for it.

What an unexpectedly great book! It had me hooked from the beginning and I loved the tone, the writing and its surreal beauty of human relationships. Memorable and intense scenes, gripping without being overly emotional. A book definitely worth reading, then re-reading.

Thanks once again kobie03 for sharing, and hakkalina for introducing us to a wonderful new author!

Thank you, lamelemon! Once more, a writer new to me is introduced by BookCrossing. Now that I checked, I found that a couple of her novels have been translated into Finnish, but not this one. Great expectations :)
