CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Found at the Book Exchange in the Christchurch Central YHA. Registered it with the intention of returning it to the book shelf.
Then I discover that it's on Futurecat's wish list. As she's one of the organizers for the Bookcrossing World Convention currently about to kick off in Christchurch, I think she deserves it!

I'm not sure I liked the way the narrative skips back to 1932 for the middle section of the book - it seems to interrupt the flow a bit, and kind of spoils some of the twists (though in another sense it doesn't, because not all of them are obvious, and you do have the enjoyment of wondering how the characters are going to get to the same "ah-ha!" moment you've just had). Though thinking about it, I'm not sure she could have written it any other way, because to really understand how Spencer Pike and his ilk thought, and why events evolved as they did, you had to be immersed in the time.
Anyway, it may not have been the best Jodi Picoult book I've read, but it's still a great story, and asks some fascinating questions.

Given to a (very patient) bookcrosser at the impromptu meetup at the Loft on Monday.
Overall, I enjoyed the book although there were a few times - particularly at the start of the story - that I forgot who some of the characters were. The middle section about 1932 didn't bother me; I think without its own section it would have been difficult to convey just what life was like back then, for those sections of society.
I was unaware of the Vermont eugenics project, and thought this was an interesting way to lead into it, by focusing on the ghost story and repeating elements of history rather than going directly for the eugenics angle.
As I find quite often with Picoult, the ending was rather too neat but she was tying all the loose ends together, and giving a more upbeat potential future than in some of her novels.
Thanks for sharing this book, and I'll send it on its way as soon as I have made repairs to the falling out pages.
Cheers
