Jay Mackintosh's memories are revived by the delivery of a bottle of home-brewed wine from a long-vanished friend. Disillusioned by adulthood, Jay escapes to a derelict farmhouse to reignite his literary career. The story, which is loosely based on the life of Harris’ paternal grandfather, takes place in the little village of Lansquenet, France, the setting of Harris’ previous book, Chocolat. She also reintroduces some of the old characters from that novel.

your generous/thoughtful RABCK arrived today and gave me a big smile. I really enjoyed two of Joanne Harris's books - Chocolat and Five Quarters of the Orange - and look forward to reading this one. Added bonus: the cover art is beautiful plus this copy seems to be autographed. Thanks again, pinklady60 - here's to another 9 years of enjoyment on BookCrossing!

Journal Entry 5 by JDT at Pleasanton, California USA on Saturday, February 18, 2012
I really enjoyed this story combining sadness, disappointment with joy and magic. Blackberry Wine is told in alternating times: Jay's coming-of-age story contrasted with his current life as a grown man, teacher, blocked writer. In addition to Jay, his wife Kerry, his past friend/mentor Joe - there are unusual characters/creative voices: wine, a house in France, a reclusive woman Marise, magic. At moments, I found it hard to follow - my recommendation: just go with it and enjoy! Thanks again, pinklady60! Continuing the journey, I'm planning to send this as a surprise to [shh] nmugirl in the International Women's Day Book Exchange RABCK.
