New Year's Eve. "A windy night and the old year dying of an ague." Benjamin Partridge, in the depths of deapair, whishes his master, Mr. Corbett, dead and in the grave... And tonight, on the bleak heights of Hampstead Heath, his wish is granted... Mr. Corbett's ghost rises from his lifeless body, and Benjamin Partridge finds himself faced with emotions and situations for which he had not bargained.

Leon Garfield has written a tale that will chill the blood, and in the manner of all good ghost stories, he has so merged reality and the supernatural that the reader must decide where one begins and the other ends.

Also included in this hardback bood are a beautifully constructed short story "Vaarlem and Tripp", and "The Simpleton". This is the story of a luckless young man, Nicholas Kemp, who unwittingly finds himself the cause of a mutiny at sea.

The three stories, alive with the shocks and surprises of their imaginative plots, are laced with humour and, in addition, "The Simpleton" is also a romance.

A 1970 edition, ilustrated by Antony Maitland.
