'Hermann Hesse's poetical novel, 'Steppenwolf', was written some twenty years before he won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946, This Faust-like and magical story of the humanization of a middle-aged misanthrope was described in the New York Times as a 'savage indictment of bourgeois society'. But, as the author notes in this edition, 'Steppenwolf' is a book which has been violently misunderstood. This self-portrait of a man who felt himself to be half-human and half-wolf can also be seen as a plea for rigorous self-examination and an indictment of intellectual hypocrisy.'

This was a very strange book and I can't say I quite enjoyed it. The ending was very abrupt and did not really follow an ending which I understood, although that may have just been me. The theory of the multiple personalities was interesting and expressed in Harry, Pablo and Hermine very effectually.

Thank you very much
Odd is the word that springs to mind. I agree with Danielle23 that the ending was a little abrupt and left you wondering quite what happened.

Thank you ever so much pinkydinky for sending me this.
It's been chosen as our book club read for next month so it's great you could send it on.
EDIT: I really enjoyed it! It's dark, it's a time fantasy and it's a very interesting view of the time period.

I have to admit, I got about a third of the way through before our book club meeting and then gave up. I was finding it all a bit strange. However, at the bookclub meeting I was advised to persevere with it so once I've finished my current books I'm going to give it another try. We'll see how it goes....!
