I bought this book as I can remember reading it when I was really young and it was just the most amazing book. When I reread it, I hadn't remembered most of it - pretty much the only thing I remembered was Jan being given the sword! Oh well...I'm glad to have read it again.

Journal Entry 4 by Caroley from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Saturday, April 25, 2009
Read this earlier today and really enjoyed it. I like a lighter read in between some of the more serious books and this one was a good story, well written with a smashing ending. What more could you want? Thanks for sending it to me Lucy. I'll try and find someone else to pass it on to.

Journal Entry 8 by kingfan30 from Corby Glen, Lincolnshire United Kingdom on Thursday, July 30, 2009
Arrived safe and sound - I look forward to reading it x 11 Feb 10 - Read this book in two evenings and really enjoyed it. A good story full of the horrors of war but not told in an offensive way, told in a way that would be easy for a child to understand. It is also full of hope and adventure, not sure how I missed this book as a kid.

Journal Entry 11 by JPix at Southampton, Hampshire United Kingdom on Saturday, July 03, 2010
This was a great story as well as being an easy read. I think some of it must have been read to us at school because I remember hearing parts of it before, especially Ruth setting up her own llittle school and getting paper and things from a soldier. I liked this book so much I bought a new copy to give my mum for her birthday!
