I found this little softcover at a local Annie's Book Stop, and was intrigued by the cover illustration: silhouettes of riders on a foggy moor. It looks like it might be a self-published book, and there's no blurb on the jacket to tell me anything more about it, but at the secondhand-book price I thought I'd give it a shot.

Turns out it's an interesting mystery/coming-of-age tale framed around a clever and much-in-demand pony, sold away from its loving owner due to financial hardship. The main character is sent to ride the horse home, and as he loses his way and meanders from place to place he's greeted again and again by people who know the horse and assume that its rider is friends with the lad who used to own it...

There's a suspicion-of-murder going on as well, and a conspiracy to try and keep the pony out of the hands of selfish horse-buyers; all in all an enjoyable visit to rural England during the '30s.

I plan to take this book to the book-buffet of this year's BookCrossing convention in DC (Apr. 15-17; see the Conventions page for more info). Whether the book gets picked up by another BCer or wild-released somewhere in the area during the many planned events, I hope it finds an appreciative reader! [Since there's an area called "Foggy Bottom" in DC, perhaps this book will wind up there?]

I guess this book should be read by fans of horses and/or fantasy stories, so I'll pass it on to someone who might appreciate it.
