The Larton Chronicles
2 journalers for this copy...
[I released a copy of this some time back; this one's been my keeper-copy.]
Another offering from the little publisher Wayward Books (www.waywardbooks.com), this is a very sweet, old-fashioned British-countryside domestic epic. Its two heroes are Robert, an ex-cop turned writer who's moved to the country, and Michael, a rather wild local character who rides hard, drinks harder, and tends to bedevil Robert even as they find themselves falling in love. (In keeping with the low-key tone of the story, there's no explicit sex - the most we get is an occasional yelp or laugh as they settle in for the night, and the odd snide remark about needing liniment the next day {grin}.) The book reminded me a bit of "The Irish R.M." in tone and setting; lots of little episodes of daily life, funny, touching, and/or unnerving, as the men's relationship grows through the years. Recommended.
Other Wayward titles that I've read include "Perfect Trust", "Paper Flowers", and "The Sorcerer's Web" (a darker, fantasy-realm romance with some S/M elements - lots of steamy sex and a generous helping of angst); of these I liked "Sorcerer's Web" best, FWIW!
