Handle with Care: A Novel
22 journalers for this copy...
Hardback book
Things break all the time. Day breaks, waves break, voices break. Promises break. Hearts break.
Every expectant parent will tell you that they don't want a perfect baby, just a healthy one. Charlotte and Sean O'Keefe would have asked for a heathy baby too, if they'd been given the choice. Instead, their lives are made up of sleepless nights, mounting bills, the pitying stares of "luckier" parents, and maybe worst of all, the what-ifs. What if their child had been born healthy? But it's all worth it because Willow is, well, funny as it seems, perfect. She's smart as a whip, on her way to being as pretty as her mother, kind, brave, and for a five-year-old an unexpectedly deep source of wisdom. Willow is Willow, in sickness and in health.
Everything changes, though, after a series of events forces Charlotte and her husband to confront the most serious what-ifs of all. What if Charlotte should have known earlier of Willow's illness? What if things could have been different? What if their beloved Willow had never been born? To do Willow justice, Charlotte must ask herself these questions and one more. What constitues a valuable life?
Emotionally riveting and profoundly moving, Handle With Care brings us into the heart of family bound by an incredible burden, a desperate will to keep their ties from breaking, and ultimately, a powerful capacity for love. With the grace and wisdom she's become famous for, this novel by beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult offers us an unforgettable story about the fragility of life and the lengths we will go to protect it.
I have two copies of this book, so I am going to offer this one up as a ray.

Starting the bookray today. Sending to the first person on the list....ladybug74. Enjoy the book!!
I'm so excited to start reading another Jodi Picoult book! I received this bookray in today's mail. I will get started on it tonight. Thanks flossie771 for sharing it with us!
I enjoyed this book, though I think I would have enjoyed it even better if it had not arrived just after I was finished with reading another Jodi Picoult book (Harvesting the Heart). I read various types of books and usually try to mix them up a bit so I don't feel like I'm reading the same book over and over again. In fact, the line about the female attorney deciding on her profession after she told her mom that the things that she liked to do were read and argue was the same in both books. (And it wasn't the same character.) I could see both sides of the argument in this book, so I bounced back and forth about how I wanted it to end. I really liked Willow and thought she was a remarkably smart girl. I did not like what happened at the end of the book, but can't say anything else without spoiling it for others.
I have the address for spoiledrotten and will get this book mailed out to her tomorrow.

Picoult did not disappoint with this story. I found the characters to be very believable and heart wrenching. I too do not want to give away the ending but feel it made the story go full circle. Thanks so much for including me I have 300dogs address and will mail this week.

Arrived safely. I have 1 1/2 books ahead of this one but will get to it asap. Looking forward to it!
Wow-another great book from Jodi Picoult. I finally started this book on Wednesday morning and had it finished by last night. This now ranks as one of my favorites. I like how it was written from different points of view and enjoyed the back and forth of it all. Also, it was interesting how the titles of the receipes/baking terms all tied in so nicely with the subject matter as well. I was suprised by the outcome and the ending too.
Thanks so much flossie771 for offering this ray. I already have the address for dvg and will mail this out later this morning.

This book is now on its way to vzfamily.
My comments: I don't think I can summarize my feelings on this book as it just encompasses so many things: family, an ill child, a healthy child dealing with her own issues, a marriage and a friendship and that is what is happening in only one household in this book.
Another amazing story by Jodi Picoult. Written in a style that makes the reader feel like the book is directed at you, each chapter is a view point of a particular character in the story. You will love Willow ~ a smart, perceptive little girl to which this story is centered. As you move through this novel, you will find that your emotions are moving and changing right along with each page. And Picoult ties everything up and still manages to surprise us at the end.
I would love to see a sequel to this story based more on Amelia. But that is just me. Perhaps you will find that you have another opinion but I can see her in her own continued story. Another great book for a book club discussion! Absolutely plenty to discuss.
Received this in yesterday's mail! I should be starting on it within the next few days! THANK YOU for adding me to your bookring!
Wow, wow, wow is all I can say. While I assumed the outcome - I didn't expect the very end. Very good book! I've said it before and I'll say it again - Jodi Picoult seems to favor the mom as being the antagonist and the father as being the one to always try to hold things together. This is a running theme in a great number of her books which I find interesting. And again - she takes a book with a large grey area and lets you make your own decision. Very intesting book and subject matter! Again - thanks for adding me to the bookring! I'll PM liz-z today!

Another awesome story by Picoult. I was hooked with the storyline, and found myself feeling badder for Amelia than for anyone else at times. I was furious with the ending! Was expecting it but deep down hoping for a happy ending. Sending on to next reader. Thanks for sharing.

Got this one today - along with 2 other rays on the same day! I think that's a new record for me! Logged and lined up on the TBR shelf. Will j/e again when I start the book. Just a couple of rays ahead of it.
Just finished the previous ray. Starting this one on the commute home tonight.
update on Wednesday; 1/3 way done this book and, as with most Jodi books, I'm riled up already! Wrongful birth - Charlotte, what are you THINKING????!!!!
Haunting. Emotional Rollercoaster. Uncomfortable. What if? Dredging up old feelings because I was in Charlotte's position - just with the hubby, instead of my child.
Emotionally draining book - I couldn't put it down....except when it was too overwhelming and I needed a crying jag and a little distance from it.
And like other Picoult books - the zinger you didn't see coming at the end.

On it's way to the next reader in the ray!
I just caught this book last week in the mail. It arrived while I was travelling in China on business, so was a nice surprise waiting for me yesterday when I returned. I just finished the excellent book I was reading, "The Speed of Dark" by Elizabeth Moon, so can start this one today!
Wow, fascinating story! I hadn't heard of Osteogenesis Imperfecta before; this was a truly engaging story. I found it quite a bit improbable in many ways, and some of those things bothered me, but Jodi Picoult can really tell a story, even if they don't always go the way you think they should.
I liked the way that each chapter is told from the view point of a character in the story. Willow, the little girl with the illness, is a totally lovable, smart, perceptive kid. It was easy to empathize with the parents and kids in this family, and understand why the mother felt she needed to make the decisions she made. But it was also very hard to understand how she could have continued to follow through with her plans while everything else she cared about fell apart.
I did not appreciate the story line about the female attorney who was adopted and looking for her long lost birth mother. For me, as an adopted baby and as the mother and aunt of adopted kids, I thought that her feelings were unreal, that she didn't "know who she was" just because she'd been raised by a wonderful couple who were not her biological parents, that attitude just kills me. Maybe other adopted kids feel that way, even those adopted at birth to wonderful families, but I just don't get the importance of biology. And then to have her "mother" divulge the information that she did, it was gratuitous, a totally unnecessary and stupid story line. Hah, just re-read this -- do you think I felt strongly about this topic??
I agree with dvg, this would be a great book to discuss in a book club, there is just so much to it.
Update: dabercro wants to be skipped, so I PM'd PaulsBooks, who also declined, so onward to Aberpeter.
arrived yesterday, perfect timing too since I just finished the book I was reading last night
Willow is a six-year old exceptional child with Osteogeneis Imperfecta. I have a nephew with Type III OI and I was immediately drawn to Willow. Charlotte, on the other hand, is self-absorbed and narrow minded. She claimed her actions were for Willow but they were really about her. She lost focus of her whole family and everything started to unravel around her. Out of all the Picoult books I have read, this is by far one of my least favorite.

Finished this book today and I'm so glad to have had the opportunity to be part of this Book Ring and to have read a Jodi Picoult novel. I'll certainly look for more books by Picoult. I was fully drawn into the story line, taking the perspective of each character as they shared their viewpoint and told their piece of the unfolding tale. The connection to each recipe included and the emotions evoked in the story added some richness to the book as well.
Will be passing this on to luckof next.

Throughout the years I have read many Jodi Picoults books and I liked most of them. This now, however, is definitely the worst one of her novels. The plot could have been interesting, but the book is simply boring, written in the same way as, for example, “My sisters keeper”, although that one was far better. The story is told from multiple points of view and from the very beginning it’s not hard to guess the ending of it. I don’t find it very realistic either and the character of Charlotte is totally unbelievable. After the first few chapters I had the intention to stop reading and pass it on, but, well, I somehow made it to the end. As soon as I have the next address I will put it into the mail.
Turnpages has already read the book, so I will now ask Herbertlooby.

Following hot on the heels of House Rules this one had it's similarities but Picoult is still a good read. Well drawn was the picture of the marital breakdown within the story. Again an excellent view of the impact a disabled child has on the siblings in the family. Worth a read.

Okey doke, I apologise for my tardiness in writing a response regarding this book that's been generously shared by the divine Ms Flossie771 :)
Right - I admit I had a quick look at the other responses to "Handle With Care", and while I saw one other person who thought the same as I did - I feel relatively safe enough to say: this was *way* too similar to "My Sister's Keeper".
Sorry guys - for me this book was same premise as "Sister's Keeper" just with a different family, two different siblings, one very different case battling it out in the courtroom.
Where "My Sister's Keeper" had me riveted from beginning to end, "Handle With Care" irritated me. No, scrap that - Charlotte irritated me, so much so, I was skipping large portions of the book looking for the bits where things like Marin's meeting of her bilogicial mother and Amelia's coping issues were revealed.
I didn't care for the story as it was way too similar to "My Sister's Keeper" from plot to the ending. Upon reading the ending I wondered if Ms Picoult had run out of ideas on how to write, as we all remember the surprise, post court case ending that affected one of the main characters.
For those of you who loved this but haven't read "My Sister's Keeper" - please do. I'd be interested to see your thoughts in comparisons between it and "Handle With Care".
Thank you again flossie771 for sharing. I think I shall wild release this to see if we can get it on a magical mystery tour. :)
