Seven years ago, on Avalon, Gwen was Dirk's lover, his Guenevere; now she wears the jade-and-silver bond of Jaantony Riv Wolf high-Ironjade Vikary, a barbarian visionary, an outcast from his own people for his acts of violence. And Garse Janacek, Jaan's *teyn*, his shieldmate, is also bound to Gwen -- in hatred. Dirk, a rogue and a wanderer, is called to be saviour of the three who are bonded together in love and hate. Journal Entry 6 by nimrodiel at Evanston, Illinois USA on Monday, February 06, 2012
I had a hard time getting into this book. Author George R.R. Martin is among my favorite authors. He is well known for the depth of his characters and the worlds they live in. However, most likely due to the shortness of this story both fell flat I loved the idea Warlorn, a world whose orbit is taking it out of reach of the sun, and slowly dying. Populated by an abandoned festival world built to celebrate all of the member planets of the federation of planets, each civilization built a city to celebrate their culture, and history, and the plant and animal life from their planets. After the festival ended, and as the planet moves further from the life sustaining sun, the living creatures and remaining people on the planet are slowly dying, the cities falling into ruins with disrepair. This was the part of the story I loved. The descriptions of the world, the exploration of the ecosystem, the look at how the world was slowly dying and the changes that were coming as the world grew colder. The actual plot, with Dirk t'Larien coming to rescue Gwen Delvano after receiving the whisperjewel he had given her years before I didn't care for at all. We are introduced to Gwen who is bound to her love Jaantony Riv and his teyn Garse. I thought that there was so much promise in the culture of the Highborn. But, concepts of their culture are introduced and not really explained well during the span of the story. There is an appendix at the end with break downs of terms and cultural references. However, there is nothing to tell the reader it is there until the end of the book when you turn the page and find it. I am interested in reading more science fiction offerings by this author. I've loved almost all of the fantasy of his I've read in the past, and this was almost as good, just not what I've come to expect from George R.R. Martin. I'm sending this to elsi who took it out of a VBB
