The Riddlemaster of Hed

Patricia A. McKillip is a painter in prose, and "The Riddle Master of Hed" is just such a portrait. As I read this book I found myself drawn into it not intellectually, but emotionally. I felt the story rather than thought about it. There was no need to ponder deeper meanings, no more than the need to when looking upon some beautiful picture. In the end, this made the story one that I could very easily slip into and experience.
The story is that of a young ruler of a small inconsequential land called Hed who is rather suddenly thrown into a conflict beyond his imagining. The entire story ultimately revolves around the resolution of various riddles the answer of which no one in all the world knows, and for which Morgan, though he resist, is compelled to answer. As Morgan journeys to find these answers, he struggles to find a way to reconcile the gentle heart with that the conquerer, to marry simplicity to destiny.
