This one came in the mail today. Thanks! I have some other books to finish first but I'll get on it as soon as I can.

It's a bit odd that I haven´t read it earlier and now that I have it is with a sense of loss that I close it.
Now it travels on. Thanks again for the opportunity!

Arrived a couple of days ago. I'm in the middle of two books at the moment, but will get to this one in a few days. Thanks for passing it on!
I thought that was beautiful! I realised quite quickly that I new the bare bones of the story, although I don't think I've read the book itself before. So either I've read a plot summary before (which seems like a shame) or it's one of those stories that crops up in various guises all over literature. That didn't really matter, though, as I don't think this book is really about the storyline itself, but far more about the simple, clean way that Hemingway wrote it. Having only read A Farewell to Arms before (more than 10 years ago, admittedly, so memory may fail here), I now understand far better why Hemingway got a Nobel Prize! I know he can't have gotten it for only this book, but it's nearly good enough on its own to merit it...
I shall be sorry to leave both the old man and his fish behind now. But the book must travel on, so I will get in touch with ETMadrid soon. Thanks ever so much for sharing this one, LadyTrinity!

I too loved this. With grandmothers who were both keen fishermen I'm really quite surprised that I'd never come across it in my earlier years. It's funny too how the morning that I started to read it I had a huge wave of inspiration for a children's book (that's a first for me - I'm not really a writer!) at the core of which is the love between a young child and a very old person. Whilst I realised that this would be about an old man and the sea, I did not know that there was a very important young boy in it too, so the first few pages quickly had me hooked (an appropriate metaphor in the circumstances!). I love the way that this is timeless and also suited to any age, and that there is no dumbing down about the actual fishing techniques, about which Hemingway was no doubt very knowledgable.
This book will soon be going to a new home in Ludlow, just as soon as I've written a letter to accompany it.
P.S. Am glad I read this before I read "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini, as there are a couple of references to the story that I'd not have recognised otherwise.
