Got it - thanks! I received this yesterday. I remember seeing a very good review of this a loooong time ago, and I'm really looking forward to diving in. I just have to get through 2 other bookring books first!
I am reading this now - and it's very good! Just wanted to let you know the status, since I received it a while ago. :)
I found this story about a race of dogs altered to speak and walk upright to be odd, engaging, and very moving. It's one of those books that you find yourself thinking about days after you've finished it. A fine addition to the Bizarre Bookring - thanks, Mom-of-one!
I will pass this along to LaurieS in the next town over. I hope you like it as much as I did.

Release planned for Monday, August 11, 2003 at The Bizarre Bookring in postal release, postal release USA.
Lives of the Monster Dogs arrived today! I have four-five books to read before I get to this but I will do my best to read it as soon as humanly possible but it may be a little while. For now it sits atop this toppling to be read pile (which never seems to get any smaller ~ hmmm). Maybe my golden retriever will decide to read it in the meantime :)

9/22/03: I'm a huge dog lover and am finding this story of walking, talking, intelligent dogs very interesting. There is a sad undertone to the whole story and an underlying thread of darkness , cruelty and the grotesque (the cow, the cow!). Very original and imaginative. The only small complaint I have, and it is because of the way the story is being told (in journal entries and by several different points of view) I'm unable to become connected to any one character or know any of them on an intimate level. That may change, though, as I'm only a little more than halfway thru.
9/24/03 I've finished! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it difficult to put down to do fun things like going to work and feeding the kids despite the fact that I wasn't ever able to know any of the characters as well as I'd have liked to. (whew, don't hold your breath while reading that sentence!). It was a wonderful addition to the bizarre ring but I do wish it hadn't ended with so many questions left unanswered.

Just caught in the mail today. This one is second up in the Bizarre pile. Never fear, I'm speedy! Journal when done...
OK, so I am not so SPEEDY!!! Actually, I had a hard time getting into the mood to read this book. The premise was a little gory for my tastes (animals + surgery... ICK!) but once I got into the anachronism of the monster dogs' lives and the character of Cleo, I really enjoyed the story! Neuhundstein would be quite a destination to see. It will take me a long time to forget the horrid little Augustus Rank and I do not WANT to forget Ludwig and Lydia. Good book! I will be sending this one on to DrBrown as we have had a lot of attrition from the list lately!
It's here! And I have been looking forward to this one! Thank you thank you!
This started well, but I couldn't finish -- I found the idea of operating on animals too upsetting. (I used to be harder than stale bread, and look at me now!) On to kikimasu!
