Journal Entry 1 by safrolistics from Newbiggin-By-The-Sea, Northumberland United Kingdom on Saturday, February 28, 2009
Nine-year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country. All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no-one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas.

I've wanted to read this for a long time. Everyone I know who has read it is so enthusiastic I'm looking forward to this already.

Journal Entry 4 by Flutterbies9 from Meare, Somerset United Kingdom on Wednesday, April 15, 2009
I loved this book, but somehow I can't see me going to see the film. Despite its somewhat gloomy subject, the book was so well written from the viewpoint of a fairly innocent nine year old that it was very easy to read. The ending was so sad - though not unexpected - that I can see why it has been described as a tearjerker. The mispronunciations of Bruno are easily interpreted by an adult audience and lend a slightly surreal, childish charm to the tale. I cannot praise this too much and hope others enjoy as much as I did. I did not want to put it down once started and read it easily in two sittings. By the way, the book cover is different to that illustrated but that does not really matter. I have another bookcrosser in mind for this one as a surprise.
