Chuck Palahniuk mentioned this book in Fugitives and Refugees. But I guess even if he hadn't, just reading the blurb would have made me curious enough to want to read it:

"Geek Love is the story of the Binewskis, a carny family whose mater- and paterfamilias set out - with the help of amphetamine, arsenic, and radioisotopes - to breed their own exhibit of human oddities. There's Arturo the Aquaboy, who has flippers for limbs and a megalomanbiacal ambition worthy of Ghenghis Khan... Iphy and Elly, the lissome Siamese twins... albino hunchback Oly... and the outwardly normal Chick, whose mysterious gifts make him the family's most precious - and dangerous - asset.
As the Binewskis take their act across the backwaters of the U.S., inspiring fanatical devotion and murderous revulsion; as its members conduct their own Macchiavellian version of sibling rivalry, Geek Love throws its sulfurous light on our notions of the freakish and the normal, the beautiful and the ugly, the holy and the obscene. family values will never be the same."

TBR - as soon as I find the time.

Well.
Especially in the chapter called "Blood, Stumps, and Other Changes" I'd expected more extreme choices from the author and was a bit pissed at her for several chapters because her story seemed half-hearted compared to my imagination. But towards the end she made good - if she'd chosen to write the scenes I'd imagined earlier, the twins would probably not have been around for the cruel scenes she had in store for them.
I won't say any more, since I don't want to post any spoilers for future readers of this book - which currently resides on my shelf as part of my SemiPermanent Collection.
