'Tom, a mistreated young chimney sweep finds himself transported into a fantastic underwater world where he becomes a water baby. Tom befriends the caddis fly, the salmon and the other underwater creatures, and Mrd Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid help to teach him about right and wrong. A vivid and exciting story with a positive message.'

I must admit to really disliking this book. Although I may have enjoyed it much more as a child I found it too preachy for my tastes and the subject matter, with my fear or fish anyway, was a little strange.
I hope the next reader enjoys this much more than I did.

Thanks again :)))
I remember reading this as a child, but it was either abridged or I blocked out the moralising. I did enjoy this, and even laughed out loud a few times, but it did get itself bogged down in the moral that it claimed not to have.

At my door when I arrived home today. Thank you so much soffitta1.
I had this as a 'Little Golden Book' when I was very young and the story has always stuck with me, so I'm really looking forward to revisiting this one.

It wasn't at all what I remembered from my childhood, but I'm glad I had the chance to reread it.
This is now to go back on the shelf of the 1001-library.

Heading off to booklady331 after the long weekend.
Wow, cat207, I was expecting ONE book not 5. You are sooooo generous. I was away on vacation and my mail was just delieved to me. Thank you again. I will pass it alone after I finished. I read the journals and hope that I find the book enjoyable. Looking at the print size, I can't see children wanting to read the book.
My first 1001 book for the year 2012. It is reserved for the 1001 VBB.
I did enjoy many of the words such as Mrs. bedonebyasyudid, Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby, other-End-of-Nowhere, Doasyoulikes, allonestone, allfowlsness, miblecomequick, oldwivesfabledom. I had to chuckle at some of the references to other works such as Peter Pan and Gulliver.
The Water-Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby is a children's novel by the Reverend Charles Kingsley. Written in 1862–1863 as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine, it was first published in its entirety in 1863. The book was extremely popular in England during its day, and was a mainstay of British children's literature through the 1920s.
The story as adapted from Wikipedia:
Tom, a young chimney sweep, who falls into a river after encountering an upper-class girl named Ellie and being chased out of her house. There he dies and is transformed into a "water baby", as he is told by a caddis fly—an insect that sheds its skin—and begins his moral education.
Tom embarks on a series of adventures and lessons, and enjoys the community of other water babies once he proves himself a moral creature. The major spiritual leaders in his new world are the fairies Mrs. Doasyouwouldbedoneby, Mrs. Bedonebyasyoudid, and Mother Carey. Weekly, Tom is allowed the company of Ellie, who had fallen into the river after he did.
Grimes, his old master, drowns as well, and in his final adventure, Tom travels to the end of the world to attempt to help the man where he is being punished for his misdeeds. Tom helps Grimes to find repentance, and Grimes will be given a second chance if he can successfully perform a final penance. By proving his willingness to do things he does not like, if they are the right things to do, Tom earns himself a return to human form, and becomes "a great man of science" who "can plan railways, and steam-engines, and electric telegraphs, and rifled guns, and so forth". He and Ellie are united.
