Left on her own when her family dies in a terrible disaster, fifteen-year-old Green is haunted by loss and by the past. Struggling to survive physically and emotionally in a place where nothing seems to grow and ashes are everywhere, Green retreats into the ruined realm of her garden. But in destroying her feelings, she also begins to destroy herself, erasing the girl she'd once been as she inks darkness into her skin. It is only through a series of mysterious encounters that Green can relearn the lessons of love and begin to heal enough to tell her story.
Sending this out as a US only BookRing. There are no special rules, just try to be considerate to the next person waiting in line. The book is very small and short, so it shouldn't take you long to read at all.

Thanks for getting my first ring off the ground! Hope this book is good! :)
I received this book in the mail yesterday. I have two vampire books to read beforehand, but I have the weekend off so I will be getting to this book real soon.

I really enjoyed this short, sweet novel. Quite the survival story, that really touched my heart. I'm glad I had the chance to read it. Sending on to next reader!

I received this today (thanks, rrcaron!), and after retrieving the mail I actually sat in the car and read the whole book while my sons slept in the back seat!
I *loved* this slim little book which has the feel of a fairy tale. I found it beautiful and moving, and will be on the lookout for my own copy. Thank you for sharing it, kerbam.
This will be moving along as soon as I can get an address and get it to the post office. :)

Well, I received this last night via the bookring and I brought it with me to read while waiting at the doctor's office and managed to breeze through the first 25 pages (which is almost a quarter of the book) in about 15 minutes...so the person before me wasn't joking when they told me it was a quick read :-). It's classic Hoffman and absolutely excellent and I can't wait to finish it when I get home and send it on hopefully later on this week (as soon as I hear back from the person I'm supposed to be sending it to.)

I'm marking this as going out on Saturday to SpaceyStacey as I am very ill and someone in my family will be mailing it for me. There is a good chance it will actually make it out on Friday. I was really excited to be part of this bookring and hope to be considered for any future ones.
Received in the post about 1 week ago. Sorry for the delay in journalling. This one will be read as soon as possible and then send on to the next participant in this ring.
Very enjoyable read about healing.
I just recieved this book today. I hope to have it read in the next week or so.
I read this book in just a few hours. It was short, but good. I thought that the message of living was wonderful. I will hopefully be passing this book on in a few days. I will contact the next person in line. Thank you Kerbam for allowing me to read this book and be a part of this ring! I never would have read this book if not for this ring! This book will be reserved for Wingedman until I can get it sent.

Wow! What a touching and beautiful story. Alice Hoffman is one of those rare writers.... if I see her name on it, I don't need to know anything else, I'm going to read it. There are good books, good stories, and then there are those who go beyond good, beyond entertaining. They are the ones that reach down deep, they turn the reader inside out and leave us forever touched by something we sometimes don't even understand, Hoffman has a way of writing stories, of creating characters that do this. Another stunning book by an extraordinary writer.
This is Green's story, but it is so much more. So much more. I read it and then read it again. Thank you for sharing this stunningly beautiful book!
JenKazoo sent the following message asking to be skipped so I will contact whiskeyjane and get it in the post as soon as possible.
I am going ot have to ask to be skipped. I have a lot on my plate right now
and not enough time for reading!
Thanks!

A smart short story about survival and trust. I finished this book in one day. I couldn't help to think of the parallels of this story and the events of 9/11. Just my opinion! Thanks kerbam for sharing this story. Now sent to mhs160 via USPS deliv conf# 03091830000234618536
Received the book in the mail today. Thanks ravencat! I hope to read it pretty quickly.
UPDATE: 1/31/10
I loved this story! This is the first Alice Hoffman book I've read and the writing is amazing. It draws you in from the first page. Green's transformations are both sad and beautiful. Looking forward to reading more books by Hoffman. Thank you so much for sharing!

It arrived! I look forward to reading it.
Thanks so much! Then, will return it to Kerbam1421.
I loved this little book! The prose was beautiful and lyrical and the story held much hope, despite the most terrible tragedy of losing her family. One theme is especially important. No matter what happens, never let yourself stray from being who you really are. Green let herself change into a lifeless being. Then she realized she wasn't Green anymore, and she had to work her way out her despair. Once that happened, she could truly be Green.

The book has made it home! Thank you to everyone that participated! :) I hope you all enjoyed the book! Sounds like it's a good one! :) It arrived last night with a cute little bookmark - thank you!
I'm going to read this book after my current read and then send it off as a Ray to jumpingin.
Such a quick little, enjoyable read! I felt so bad for Green's loss and I really did hurt for her. But I enjoyed seeing her work through it and start to get on with her life.
I will be passing along to jumpingin soon.
Thank you everyone for participating!

FINALLY got this off in the mail. Sending this as a Ray to Canada! Enjoy! :)
Thanks, kerbam1421--the book arrived safely today. I will ray it forward when it's done.
I read this entire book in one day--it's a very quick read. It's beautifully written story of a young woman's survival, full of wisdom.
Thanks, kerbam1421, for sharing this lovely book. I am hoping to start a new ray for it. Or, if there's not enough interest for that, I will send it to one of the many people who have it one their wishlists.
New bookray!
Usual rules apply. Please try to read it and send it on within a month, but if for some reason you can't, just let us know. Please check here before mailing, in case the order has changed. It's fine to use surface mail.
Since this is a ray, it would be great if the last person could keep it moving somehow.
