1001 books

From the back of the book..

Mary Lamb is confined by the restrictions of domesticity: her father is losing his mind, her mother watchful and hostile. The great solace of her life is her brother Charles, an aspiring writer. It is no surprise when Mary falls for the bookseller's son, antiquarian William Ireland, from whom Charles has purchased a book. But this is no ordinary book - it once belonged to William Shakespeare himself. And William Ireland, with his green eyes and his red hair is no ordinary young man...

The Lambs of London brillantly creates an urban world of scholars and entrepreneurs, a world in which a clever son will stop at nothing to impress his showman father, and no one knows quite what to believe.

I will be reading this soon and then intend to send it out as a bookring.

Enjoyed this, although I did think that the story was more about William Ireland than the Lambs themselves. Will sending off to Caroley on Friday.

I really enjoyed this one. I did guess where it was going about half way through but it didn't spoil it for me, as it was as much about the characters as it was the plot.
What I did like was all the Shakespearean trivia. I recently read Bill Bryson's Shakespeare so a lot of what was mentioned was familiar to me from that, and it helped the book to make more sense to me.

Thanks for sharing it Wiggly. I'm just waiting for confirmation of Danielle's address and then I'll send it on its way.

This was an interesting one, not sure I liked the Mary Lamb side of the story but it was intriguing none the less

I really enjoyed this. It was easy to follow, with likeable characters, and even though like the other journallers, I guessed how the book would end I still enjoyed it all the same. I found it a lot more enjoyable than 'Hawksmoor', but would still love to read some of his other books.
Thanks WigglyWoods for letting me read this - sorry I took so long to get to it!

9 Aug 09 - A nice little book to read. Like others I guessed what was going on but still found it enjoyable. Thought maybe it should have been called the Irelands of London!! Thanks for including me will get it sent to next in line on Monday.

An enjoyable read. I agree with the previous journalers that the Irelands seemed to be the main characters but still a good book.

I loved the story in this & the characters. Not sure whether it should be a 1001 book, but I thought it was a good read. Loved all the Shakespeare references & the 'faux-history.'

Have PM'd jellyfish67, so hopefully it will be on its way next week.

Thanks for sharing!!
