9 out of 10

Since becoming a BookCrosser I have really gotten into travel writing in a big way. While I do enjoy the lighter side of travel writing the most (Bill Bryson and Tony Hawks being faves of mine) I do enjoy the more serious writing on travel and the journey. This book strikes a good mix of the two.

Graeme Lay is a kiwi who is not only a travel writer but has written short stories, novels, a guidebook, YA novels and other non-fiction.
Starting with an introduction (which describes an incident with James Bond at the airport check in counter) some information and stats about why people travel follows, which I found particularly fascinating as a student of travel and tourism.
Including musing on maps, the culturally sensitive traveller, travel by train, plane and ship and being a travel writer (which includes getting compared to Paul Theroux).

I was tempted to keep this book in my personal collection but instead I will take it to the convention so it can find a new home.

Traveling is what I do and travel writing is what I want to do. This looks like a great read. Though why a Kiwi would want to leave the most delight country in the world is beyond me.

Enjoyed this one a lot. Some gentle, whimsical travel stories.

Sent to me on my own travels to the USA this year while I was at summer camp - can't wait to read it and leave for another traveller!

Although I have traveled in my youth, I don't do much of it any more. That doesn't mean I won't enjoy this book. Discoverylover handed it over to me when I met her recently.
