"Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
This sequel to Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca depicts the further adventures of Maxim de Winter and his second wife.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
What happened to Maxim de Winter and his second wife after Manderley burned? This suspenseful "completion" of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca begins with the couple's return to England, following a ten-year, self-imposed exile, for the funeral of Maxim's sister Beatrice. In a voice true to the original story, Hill's Mrs. de Winter chronicles Rebecca's continuing shadow on their life: a mysterious wreath bearing a card with the initial "R" is discovered near Beatrice's grave, and unwelcome visitors include Jack Favell, who has visions of blackmail, and Mrs. Danvers, who seeks revenge. The narrator's happiness with Maxim is threatened by his first wife's invasive presence. Can she protect him from the past, or will Rebecca's murder be avenged? Sure to please du Maurier fans, this is highly recommended for public libraries. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 6/15/93.

Received today as a surprise RABCK from the very generous Davros-10.

I read "Rebecca" years ago in school & enjoyed it so it will be very interesting to see how a different author handles the sequel.

Thanks for this Davros-10, it's much appreciated :o)

Journal Entry 4 by wingPlum-crazywing from Brighouse, West Yorkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, April 20, 2010
It must be 20 years since I last read "Rebecca" so I can't really recall how well Susan Hill has captured the style of the original, though I do remember enjoying it. Sorry to say that at first I found this a bit disappointing. It seemed to get off to a really slow start & so it took me quite along time to get into it, indeed, I was a good two-thirds of the way through before it really piqued my interest.

Once again the second Mrs de Winter, who still remains nameless, can be a bit pathetic at times...stand up to folk for goodness sake woman! (though to be fair I wouldn't want to square up against Mrs Danvers!)
But despite that weakness, she has a strong desire to protect her husband. The basis of the story seemed to be how she felt the need to prevent Maxim from hearing any mention of the names Manderley or Rebecca & the lengths she would go to in order to prevent past events being brought to light again.

I really appreciate you sending me this Davros-10, I'm just sorry I haven't given it a more glowing review.

It has arrived today!
It was a miracle that it wasn't all wet when my sister brought the package in, it's raining so much here!
Once more, thank you so much, plum-crazy! It was so sweet of you to send so many adorable things along with the book . I loved the owl's notebook, the bookmarker, the postcard, the stickers and Garfield's comic strip! :)
As soon as I finish up reading I'll post a new JE.

Journal Entry 7 by Libera13 at Vila Nova da Barquinha, Santarém Portugal on Wednesday, November 24, 2010
I've finished the book just now! I have to say I was greatly impressed by it. I am now very curious about reading more by Susan Hill. Although the book starts a bit too slow, all the action being concentrated from the middle towards, and some thoughts being repeated unnecessarily, I found it quite light and pleasant to read. The last time I read "Rebecca" was about 4 years ago, and as I read it in portuguese I can't truly compare writing styles, because translations make it all very different in the end. However I do believe Susan Hill writing is quite alike du Maurier's, although I can't say for sure. She definitely captured the characters' personality wonderfully! I had to constantly remind myself it was a sequel by another author, because it fits "Rebecca" almost perfectly. Our Mrs. de Winter, the book's namesake, continues, as always, quite annoying sometimes, but I do forgive her, because despite that she's a character I like :) She could perfectly be a real person, I think. It is the constant fear, secrets and ingenuity that bother me. As for Maxim, I had never thought him to end up being so selfish, after all his wife (still not named) did and suffered. That was quite a delusion, although it was never a character that I sympathized much with. The character I like the most is, probably, Rebecca (even though she's just an omnipresent ghost). The end still brought some discreet tears to my eyes, though.

One thing that I very much enjoyed was the description of the landscapes. The days, the weather, the views, the early mornings, the late afternoons...! it all seemed so perfect and melancholic that it increased my wanting of visiting England.

Thank you very much, Davros-10 and Plum-crazy, for giving me the chance to read this great book! Here are my favourite two passages:

"(...) but now I remembered the child I myself had been, and the growing girl, and then the gauche young woman who had met Maxim, the bride arriving at Manderley, the passionate, loving, bewildered wife in awe and dread of it all, places, people, memories, I saw them all standing in line, one fading and giving away to the other. They led here, to this woman, with the begginings of grey hair, staring out of the mirror. They were that person. Me. And yet they were not, they were ghosts, and they had vanished. (...) How many selves do we contain, like Russian dolls concealed within one another?"

And this one, being what it all came down to:
"We are not punished for our sins, we are punished by them. We cannot live with guilt for the whole of our lives"

Journal Entry 11 by MKtiny at Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, February 8, 2011
I enjoyed this book, but not as much as the original. It is slow moving, but beautifully written. It's more about how Mrs. De Winter's feelings about exile and Maxim's crime as it is a mystery about who is 'following' them. I want to like Mrs. De Winter, but I have to agree she is weak (probably a bit to realistic) and Rebecca is an altogether a more interesting character.

Thanks for sharing Libera13. It will be on it's way to icila today.

I started this book earlier this week while trying to finish off a couple of other books I was reading. I have finished these other books and this will be my primary read until I finish it.

I'm sorry I have had the book so long but hope to finish it quickly now that I am underway with it.

May 26: I am having problems getting into ths book. I am hoping to sit down this weekend and read enough to get sucked into the story. Right now the book doesn't call to me.

June 1: The book is still slow moving although the main characters have arrived in Scotland. I plan to preserve in hopes of reaching the good parts soon

June 2: This book seems to move rather slow. They have found Cobbett's Brake

Journal Entry 17 by NMReader at Herndon, Virginia USA on Sunday, June 5, 2011
I had a hard time getting into the book but around 200 pages or so the book seemed to pick up speed.

I think Susan Hill did a good job keeping the characters true to what was written in Rebecca.

Thanks for sharing the book

Finished this one a little bit ago. It's a good book - Susan Hill has Daphne de Maurier's writing style down to a T, and I got the familiar little feeling of dread when Mrs. Danvers appeared. The ending kind of felt like a letdown, though - for reasons I won't reveal for fear of spoilers.

Thanks 4thEstate for posting in a good solid packet. I've sent a message to katrinat so hopefully her address will be ready when I've finished.
Thanks to all those who have kept this book travelling through the last two years.

Journal Entry 23 by Sherlockfan at Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Thursday, October 6, 2011
I've finished this book now. LIke many of the other readers I found it rather slow and really found the numerous descriptions of the landscape slightly tedious. Too many IMHO.
However, I did enjoy the way that Susan Hill has captured the essential essence of Rebecca and her character in particular. Quite a nice air of tension when first Jack Flavell and subsequently the awful Mrs Danvers make their appearances. I really felt that Mrs de Winter was a bit of a wimp. No doubt she thought she was doing the right thing by keeping Maxim protected but she was a bit too much a paragon of virtue for my taste.

Thanks to Davros-10 for setting this book free, and to the others who have sent it on its way. I've heard from Katrinat so will send the book on its way.

The Post Office is quite close to our house and the threatened showers haven't arrived yet so I'm off to post the book to Katrinat this afternoon.
Have just returned from viewing "Jane Eyre" in our local cinema and found this new version on an old classic very brooding but fulfilling. Would like to have seen Colin Firth as Mr Rochester.
We also saw a short trailer for Sherlock Holmes and what a travesty of my favourite books that looks like. We will NOT be there.

Arrived today, I only finished a Susan Hill a few weeks ago and picked up some Daphne du Maurier's work at the weeked, so very coincidental. I read Rebecca years ago so I hope I'll understand it all.
Thanks for the little pictures, my brother loves New Zealand and I can see why. I have an essay to write this week, once this is done I'll be able to read this.

I will start the New Year with this book. But before I will read this story I have started reading "Rebecca" by Daphne de Maurier yesterday in the afternoon. "Mrs. de Winter" is the sequel to "Rebecca". So it made sense to read both in a row. I will finish "Rebecca" till December 31th.

Journal Entry 29 by Simson-Shilitoe at Neewiller-près-Lauterbourg, Alsace France on Sunday, January 20, 2013
This book lacks the suspense and intrigue of the original. The entire first two thirds could have been condensed into 2 chapters. The characters have lost their original strength and become insipid. I absolutely liked "Rebecca" and Daphne du Maurier`s style of writing but Susan Hill could just not 'do' Du Maurier.

Susan Hill is a very good writer as a general rule, however, I did not like the sudden change in character. Suddenly, Maxim De Winter becomes rude and arrogant and once in the novel, the narrator (who remains unnamed in this as well) suddenly comes out of her shy coma to reveal a pillar of power to Mrs. Danvers. It is only shown once in the entire novel and just doesn't fit. Also, Susan Miller has tried to recreate the feel of the thirties, but the plot is changed so much with the De Winters buying a new house. Finally, the book was very predictable with coincidences. This made the story very boring to read because you always seemed to know that when Mr. or Mrs. De Winter finally get settled again, something terrible happens. If Miller had written this as a seperate novel from Rebecca, it would have been much better.

I loved Rebecca and it seems like a long time since I joined up for this ring/ray, so it was a lovely surprise to be contacted for my address and an even nicer one to return from being away to find this waiting for me. Thanks Davros-10 for organising this ray/ring

I really enjoyed Rebecca and I was worried that this book might not be to the same standard as the original book. I was pleasantly surprised to find this book an extremely good follow on and enjoyed it immensely. I found the book engaging, although sad. I guess there can be no follow on from this. This would make a very good follow on film as well I think. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoyed Rebecca, it has all the suspense and surprise and I didn't guess the ending (or more likely I didn't want to guess the ending!)

I had no reply from the last person on the list and Davros-10 has asked me to release it. I know who I am going to give it to as someone at work was very interested in the book. I need to do a little bit of repair to the book before I do so and I doubt she will journal, however I feel the book has a little bit more life in it still
