This is a book that starts with an ending: the death of an elderly nun in a 15th century Italian convent. A mystery is sparked when it is discovered that the nun’s supposed tumor appears to have been faked and she has an provocative tattoo entwining her torso where it has been hidden by her habit.

From there the story vaults to the beginning - to when this mysterious nun was a 14 year old Florentine named Alessandra. Alessandra is the clever, inquiring youngest daughter of a rich cloth merchant chafing at her incredibly sheltered existence. She loves art and is drawn to a painter her father has hired to paint the chapel in their home. She is married to a man much older than herself and finds out that he is not who he seems and after their daughter is born she has to make a choice about her future,

The book has a lot of info about the city of Florence that is an important character in the book from it's power base in the years of the Medici's and then it's downfall during the occupation by the French.

This one is now ready for a new reader.
