from the book cover:

in this powerfully affecting memoir, joan jara, english wife of the legendary chilean folksinger victor jara, who was murdered by the military in 1973, vivdly describes their meeting and life together. she relives the tumultuous years during which they worked together in what became the popular song movement and the euphoria they shared as part of the massive social upheavel that brought salvador allende to power. as victor's compañera and herself a participant in the struggle, joan jara writes with a fierce, partisan passion and with extraordinary courage. it is a story full of hope and joy and laughter as of bitter disappointment and agony. but most of all it is a story written with a shining honesty, warmth and directness, as life-giving as victor jara's own beautiful songs."

I received the CD in today's mail. I will keep a lookout for the book, which I am sure is soon to follow. My husband has very eclectic taste in music, so I am hoping he will be able to enjoy this as well.

Book and CD arrived together - thanks! I'll be enjoying both over the next few weeks before mailing to Brazil.

Update - started reading this last night. My first impressions are good - I like the way Joan Jara writes. I plan to listen to the CD this morning while my children are at pre-school (so I'll have some peace to appreciate it!). Will hopefully have finished reading by Sunday, and I will complete journalling my impressions after that.

I had never heard of Victor Jara before I came across this book, but I am glad that I have been introduced to him and the whole New Chilean Song Movement. This is a moving biography of the heroic lives of Victor and his family and friends, as they first struggle against the existing regime to successfully work for the election of a socialist President (Salvador Allende) and are subsequently crushed by Pinochet's military coup. The involvement of the CIA and multinationals was a particularly chilling aspect of the story.

I had never really thought of music and dance as a political force before but having read this book I appreciate how powerful they can be, especially when trying to overcome heavy censorship, right-wing domination of the mass media and widespread illiteracy in the rural population.

I have learnt so much about Chile through reading this book. Thank you for the experience mfa. Sending the CD with it was a fantastic idea too. I'll send both on to MaLu as soon as I get her address.

Well, after several attempts to find MaLu I decided to get the book moving again and mailed it today to Tuz instead, and have asked Tuz to pass it on to MaLu afterwards.

As a native of a South American country, this account was quite clarifying and illustrative of an era. I trully appreciate it :)

The book will go to the next in the list soon.

August 31, 2004

I'm sorry for taking this long to read the book. I spent the last months finishing my Master's dissertation, and as soon as I could, I started the book.

I really liked it, and it went above my expectations acturally. I hadn't heard anything about Victor Jara, and nobody here (I live in Brazil) seems to have heard of him either. But the account is quite revealing and clarifies many aspects of cultural and political life in Chile and South America, and I found this enriching.

This afternoon I posted the book alone to tammy, I hope it arrives in the US soon. Thanks! :)

I'm very excited to announce that the book arrived just a few minutes ago! As a folk music enthusiast, I can not wait to receive the CD and hear Victor's music for the first time.

Sadly, there are many of us who have walked in Joan's shoes. I know all too well what is like to re-start your life with no identity, to have your livelihood shattered and destroyed; and to leave behind your belongings along with everything and everyone you once held dear.

I have a great amount of admiration for those rare individuals like Victor, who are not afraid of standing up for the working man. Who take an active role in the struggle for social change and are not afraid to make a difference, regardless of the consequences.

AARGH! I finally had this book packed up and ready to mail, but with all the other books I was also taking to the PO this morning, this one slipped out and was left behind in my front hallway! I'm out of town tomorrow through Thursday, so I'll mail it out next Saturday.

My apologies for keeping the CD longer than I should have. Life has been hectic and I lost track of time. I decided to create a label for the actual CD, so every partcipant that receives can easily find the BCID needed to make a journal entry. Click here to see what it looks like (the actual label will not have the Tammychi watermark).

The CD is on it's way to Ramya

This arrived yesterday -- I'm so glad to be able to have a chance to listen to this CD! I got home too late last night to put it on, but I'm going to listen this morning (as I write out cards for the BC Christmas card exchange!) Thanks, mfa, for making another copy of this CD to share.

I've sent the CD off to adah-price today, with USPS delivery confirmation no. 0305 1720 0002 6778 6804.

when a bookring starts, there's always the chance of it never coming back home. when that happens it's not the lost book i regret, but the people who are unable of understanding that the joy of all this is more about sharing and respecting than anything else. keeping a book when others are expecting to read it is just mean and cheap. adah-price is now on my black list.

a second copy was sent to fio-dagua yesterday.
