The first part of the Millenium Trilogy

I read about the last two-thirds of the book in one go, couldn't put it down.
I really liked it, but I also felt (kind of) depressed by it - all Scandinavian mysteries make me feel like that.

What is it with bookrings? None for weeks then 3 in one day! This was one of the 3. I'm looking forward to it and will read it ASAP.

Journal Entry 4 by amberC from Darwin, Northern Territory Australia on Sunday, March 8, 2009
For the first half I'd read a couple of pages, put the book down and wander off to do something else. Then yesterday it suddenly grabbed me and I couldn't put it down.

Apart from that there were a couple of odd words used in the translation. I had a smile when I saw Tennant Creek, a town from my part of the world, mentioned ....but a sheep station west of TC is very unlikely. It's all cattle out there.

Posting to Tinina67 today.

A fantastic book, couldn't put it down once I started. The only thing I didn't like was that the start of the book was a bit slow reading.

Took me a little while to get into it, but once I did it went rather quickly.

I agree with amberC about Tennant Creek, I'm from the NT as well, and cattle is definitely more likely.

All in all I really enjoyed it. Will post to mrbaggins1 as soon as I get the details.

This was really a great book, one of the best I've read this year. Starts of slow and I suppose one has to get used to the rhythm of the language. Maybe because the novel was translated from Swedish. Intelligently plotted with many twist and turns. I'm giving it to Tallulah1, a fellow reader in the office, before passing it on to FrancesinSA. It'll be released within a week or so. Thanks for sharing!

Enjoyed the book - found it engrosing from the start but it does leave you with a bit of a gloomy feeling. Wonder how books 2 & 3 ties in with the whole theme... can imagine more doom and gloom.

This is a great story. I read on the internet that 10 books were planned for the Millennium series. We will have to wait until October 2009 for the third volume, The Girl who Kicked a Hornet's Nest to be published in English. I can't wait to read volume two.
Thanks UlrikeW for starting this bookring, Tinina67 for telling me about the books and to mrbaggins1 for posting it to me.

Journal Entry 22 by samulli from Weimar, Thüringen Germany on Saturday, May 30, 2009
Just arrived this morning. I am very much looking forward to reading this book, since I have heard only good things so far.
It's the only bookring in my house right now, so it shouldn't take me too long.

Journal Entry 23 by samulli from Weimar, Thüringen Germany on Sunday, June 7, 2009
Hm. I can't say I am bowled over by this book. It's alright, I guess, but I am afraid my expectations were way too high.
I agree with the other journallers that the start is quite slow. Especially the first 70 pages, before we even meet anybody of the Vanger family, seem in retrospect much too long an exposition. Later the story picks up, but personally I never got to a point where I couldn't put the book down. I also have trouble to see why the english title is about the Salander girl, since she isn't exactly the main focus of the story. And the solution to the whole Harriet storyline was a bit over the top in my eyes.
I had trouble with the very uneven translation. English is not my first language either, but some of the expressions seemed downright odd. That I can't blame the author for, but I am also not a big fan of his own writing style either. It's too long-winded for my taste and he puts in way too many details that didn't interest me at all and as far as I can see weren't all that necessary to move the story forward. I would have enjoyed the book more if it had been a good 100 pages shorter.
All in all it was an ok read, but I really don't see what the hype is about. And when I read in the back that "the books in Stieg Larsson's Millenium trilogy are destined to be regarded amongst the best crime novels ever written" - uhm, I don't think so. I am glad I had the chance to read this book, but I highly doubt that I will bother to pick up the next 2 installments.

I already have bananabrianna's address and the book will be mailed out tomorrow.

June 8th:
Mailed the book off to next reader today.

Received in the mail today! Thank you!!

Journal Entry 25 by Vapermom from Trenton, Ontario Canada on Monday, August 3, 2009
I found this book difficult to get into at the start, I'd say the first three or four chapters were hard for me to get into, what with the different Swedish names and such. I couldn't follow who was who for awhile.

This weekend was a long weekend and we went to the cottage so I'd steal away some pages every time my daughter went down for a nap. I found the book hard to put down once Mikael started getting into the whole investigation and how the whole Harriet mystery summed up was not what I had expected. I really liked this book but was very disappointed in the ending.
I don't think I'll read the rest of the trilogy because of the way this one ended. I don't think it left anything open for the next book.

Thank you UlrikeW for sending this book around, and thank you samulli for mailing it to me!

I have to admit that at 500+ pages, this book looks a little intimidating. :) I've got three other books in front of this one, all of which I should finish soon. I'm looking forward to reading this and will post again when I start.

I'm afraid I'm just not going to have time to finish this one. I keep getting swamped in school work, and I've already had the book long enough. I'm sorry for holding everyone up.

From the small part that I've read, it does look like it'll be an interesting story. I'll have to check it out at the library to finish it once things calm down a bit.

Thank you very much for the chance to read it, and apologies for keeping this longer than I should have.

Happy reading, everyone!

Journal Entry 31 by ealasaidmae from New Orleans, Louisiana USA on Friday, October 23, 2009
A good book but I'm not completely satisfied. The ending feels rushed and a bit contrived. But watching Mikael research and investigate is entertaining and he's a very likeable character. Salander is interesting but she ended up annoying me. She's too repetitive. I still want to read the other books in the trilogy but I might not be quite as excited about them as I was going into this.

Journal Entry 34 by wingperryfranwing from Elk Grove, California USA on Sunday, November 15, 2009
Finished reading this superb thriller today. After the first couple of chapters, this novel grabbed me and didn't let go until the last page! I thought the titular Lisbeth Salander was an unforgettable character - a computer hacker par excellent who makes a living by doing deep background investigations of sometimes very unsavory characters. She is a young almost anorexic looking outcast with body piercings and tattoos, a photographic memory, and possibly afflicted with Asperger Syndrome, who has been abused and is under legal guardianship of the State. She teams up with journalist Mikael Blomkvist to solve a years old mystery about the disappearance of a young girl in the 1960s from the industrial Vanger family in Sweden. Along the way, a very perverse mystery is solved involving a serial killer. I don't want to give away too much, but this story really keeps up the intensity. I'm really looking forward to the other books in the Millennium series. I also found out that this novel has been made into a movie in Sweden. It was showing recently at an American Film Institute series of foreign films here in the Washingon, DC area. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the limited screenings. Hope to see it when it goes into general release here in the U.S. or when it is released on DVD. I understand the entire Millennium series will also be filmed.

Thanks again UlrikeW for sharing this super story. I'll be sending this on to brunton11 tomorrow.

I loved loved loved this... will post a better review later.

On it goes to Switzerland!!

Happy Easter, everyone!!

Here's the review:
This was so good and provocative on so many different levels.

I really liked Salander as a character. She is disturbed and disturbing and that is the fascination. The book hints at her past (which will surely come out in book 2) and I can guess at some of it based on her dealings with the men in her life. She is incredibly vulnerable, but certainly not defenseless.

I like best the part when she realizes that she has misjudged something about a person's psychological make up, realizes that she herself has contributed something to the confrontation that results, does research to understand it further... and then gets even, not only for herself, but for many others past and future. Chilling in a million different ways.

The whole book is chilling, especially considering the theme of silence. If you know a crime--embezzlement or murder--has happened (is happening and will happen again) can you justify your silence?
