Tsotsi is an angry young gang leader in the South African township of Sophiatown. A man without a past, he exists only to kill and steal. But one night, in a moonlit grove of bluegum trees, a woman he attempts to rape forces a shoebox into his arms. The box contains a baby, and his life is inexorably changed. He begins to remember his childhood, to rediscover himself and his capacity for love. Turned into an Oscar-winning movie in 2006, Tsotsi’s raw power and rare humanity show how decency and compassion can survive against the odds.

Received from Canaongate books. Thank you! This is not a book I would have chosen myself, so am grateful for the opportunity to read this and discuss it on the forum. It's always good to try something newQ

A wonderfully written, dark tale with interesting characters and a couple of unexpected plot twists. The main character of Tsotsi should be repulsive, when you consider his approach to violence and death, but his slowly emerging confusion and desperate attempts to remember his past make him an interesting character. When his fellow gang member Boston's story becomes known, I felt some sympathy for him too.

Overall it was a very interesting insight into life in South African townships during the time period.
