9 out of 10

A mystery, but not one starring Travis McGee.
The story of the Eternal Church of the Believer, a massive evangelical empire with more than its share of secrets. Armies of believers offer prayers and donations, and some give more than they should. The founder is secretly dying, and his son is not strong enough to run the church. There is a reverend who lusts after young women, a lesbian couple who must keep their love a secret, an extramarital affair involving a preacher, a morally reprehensible system of badgering those who can least afford to pay for donations, and more. A place that claims to be a house of God, but is filled with deceit, thievery, fornication, and maybe even murder. Roy Owen has come here searching for his wife, a journalist who vanished while working on a story on the ECB.
The Eternal Church of the Believer seems more like a cult to me. The members are expected to live by a very restrictive set of rules. They must tithe ten percent of their income to the church, even if they have berely enough to survive. They are forbidden to seek medical attention in most cases, forbidden to donate money to causes outside the church, forbidden to register to vote or join any club or political party, and forbidden to watch television programs not on the approved list. Perhaps most frightening of all is the rule that members are not allowed to socialize with non-members, not even family. One believer is described as

one of Brother Meadows' ignorant tithing multitudes, compartmented away from life and reality, charged with thinking only those thoughts which reinforce her state of captivity.
But the Church gives them something they crave, a feeling of belonging.
I found it funny that when an audio tape of an extramarital affair is played, the sound quality is discussed, speaking of the fidelity on a tape of an infidelity. There is also a reporter in the book who came from a family of compulsive readers. If you didn't finish a book quickly enough, somebody took it when you weren't looking..
I also like a quote at the beginning by Vincent Van Gogh:
I believe more and more that God must not be judged on this earth. It is one of his sketches that has turned out badly.

Such a great mystery surrounded by the shenanigans of the church in their hyprocrisy and scam of tithing to boost the religious empire. The characters are somewhat humourous and quite colourful. Thanks Phantom for such an interesting novel! :)
