Elmore Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing
6 journalers for this copy...
Picked this up at the dollar store in Chantilly, Virginia. This is a cute little book, easily read in about five minutes, of brief writing advice from the author of Get Short (among many others). There isn't nearly enough content to justify a 90-page hardback, but it was only a dollar.

Received from melydia on Sunday! I look forward to reading this book. From a brief flip-through, the illustrations certainly look amusing :-) Thank you!
This book is such an enjoyable, quick read. The book is set up with 10 (well, really 11) great tips about what NOT to do in your writing. It's all actually great advice, but the reason this book worked for me is the way that advice is presented. There is very little text on each page--sometimes a few sentences and sometimes just a few words. The advice is presented, a reason is given, maybe an example or counter-example is given, and then there's a funny illustration. That makes each point infinitely stronger and more memorable. Leonard doesn't get bogged down in detail (basically, he follows his own Rule 10) and his book left me informed and inspired. It's everything you need from a writing book in a short & sweet, useful & entertaining little package!

I opened this book up to check out the BCID and got through the whole thing. The ten rules of writing in this book are ones I have come across before but the straight-forward tone of the author and the effective illustrations get the message through.
I willdefinitely (curse you, adverb!) be sending this on to my fellow writers, who I hope will read it and then do the same.
